Hi,

Sorry, newbie question:

Can the Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter be added to an old Sharp CD-MPX 100 stereo (which I'll be receiving shortly for free)?

I've attached a photo of the back of the stereo (an image I found online, as I haven't received it yet). I think it says AUX. Is that an audio input? Probably a dumb question, but I'm here for help.

Yes, you will need a 3.5mm to double RCA lead, plug the 3.5mm into the audio out end of the adapter, the RCA ends then get plugged in to the aux in, just make sure you get a single 3.5 to dual RCA lead.

Unless they have improved, the logitechs only support SBC codec which is really bad quality and the one that got bluetooth its reputation of sounding like trash.

There are many better quality adapters that support apt-x and aptx HD all over aliexpress etc for less money. Some have a slightly hissy output but that doesn't really matter when the Logitech makes any high end sound like someone flapping a piece of aluminum foil around

Look for AptX of you're running Android (and the phone / tablet supports it), if you're on iOS don't worry at all as iOS doesn't support AptX.

Also, if the phone doesn't support Aptx, does it then not work at all or is the quality just poor?

If it is used by lots of people then consider buying a Chromecast Audio - they're available at some Spark stores and online on the likes of Trademe.

There's no WiFi available in the house.
Users will be connecting to the internet via 4G.
Chromecast needs WiFi, right?

Looking at the stereo you are connecting to, is it likely that the difference in audio quality between codecs would be even relevant?

I use the logitech one connected to a (cant remember what brand) mini system in our garage, sound is good enough and loud enough for casual listening (use it when doing gym workouts). Would I have it on my main system, no idea as that has airplay / spotify connect and heos etc, but for what you want, I am sure it would be fine.

Its not to do with the quality of the stereo, some people are just not bothered by it, others cant stand it. I find that crap systems tend to make it even more pronounced since they tend to have horrid boosts to the high end to make it sound more crisp to the average listener.
