I am building a house later in the year and I am researching and planning the entertainment system. I was thinking that in-built in-wall/ceiling seakers would be best due to look mainly as there are no wires everywhere.

Questions:

1. How good are the in-wall speakers you can buy? What should I be looking for?
2. Is it better to put the home theatre speakers in the ceiling behind a cover?

I think you need to establish your budget first and go from there. A good set of in wall speakers are going to cost quite a bit more than a good set of standard speakers. If you are really into music you should at least consider having the front speakers as standard and perhaps the rest in wall.

I wouldn't call ourselves sound experts - we have a Sony midi system that I bought in 1993 currently and we think the sound out of this is just fine.

Don't want to spend megabucks

The thing is unless you spend quite a bit on decent in wall speakers you will probably get better music quality from your 1993 midi system.

I looked at putting in wall speakers in but even the cheap ones were going to be $2000 plus for a set of five.

Friends of mine have a 42" LCD mounted to the wall, plus in-wall speakers all around their lounge. Their setup looks amazing, and sounds great though I'm not sound expert.

What's triggered you to put in an entertainment system? If you are renovating, I'd suggest running PVC pipes in the walls - if you do ever manage to get in wall speakers, at least you won't have to pull the walls apart to run cables.

Mounting them on wall can be done with almost any speakers, which give you plenty of options, and you can put in a plate behind it which it can connect to, so you don't see any wires. Just another option there.
Also allows you to upgrade in the future for some reason, not that you really would with speakers.

as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.....

i renovated but already owned speakers so didnt want to spring for new ones. i'm pretty happy with the result overall, and I can always change them to in-wall speakers later on (it would be harder to go the other way). i didnt bother with wall plates - would have cost more an probably looked uglier too
