Hi, I'am getting a new My Sky Decoder to go with my Samsung Full HD TV, Right now i am using normal sky through composite into my DVD recorder that connects to the TV through S-Video, The Picture is not that great. I have played some 576p video on my game console through HDMI and it looks fine. Will my sky play the non-HD shows in 576i or 576p please reply.

SD content is delivered to your HDi box as 576i. However, assuming you will connect to your TV via HDMI... You can choose one of five options in the setup menu:
  • Auto: The HDi box will negotiates with your TV through HDMI and runs whatever the TV wants. In your case, probably 1080i. This will apply to both SD & HD content, with the box upscaling any SD or 720p content.
  • 576p: All content (both HD & SD) will be delivered as 576p.
  • 720p: Likewise but 720p - SD channels will be upscaled by the HDi box.
  • 1080i: Likewise but in this instance 1080i.
  • Passthrough: All content will be delivered to the TV as received and no processing will be done by the box. At the moment all HD channels are 1080i and the SD channels are 576i. EDIT: Just checked, passthrough SD channels are 576i, not p.
You can try experimenting to see which gives the best result, but the setting is global and cannot be changed for different channels. We have a 720p HDTV and found that the box does a better job of downscaling 1080i than the TV so have left the setting on Auto (TV asks for 720p). I don't believe that 576i is an option via HDMI.

Sky's SD channels are currently broadcast in 576i, and not in progressive. Same with freeview.
