I'm trying to get audio working from my Yamaha RX-V485 receiver to my Apple AirPods.

The receiver has a bluetooth transmitter, and I can pair the AirPods without issue. But the sound keeps coming out of the speakers and I get no audio via the AirPods.

The only info I can find tells you how to pair the headphones (which I have done), but I can't find anything about setting bluetooth as the output. I assumed it would be automatic when you paired the headphones?

Does anyone have any ideas?

Try some non apple bt gear st see what the result is.

It might be an issue with the airpods

Tried it this morning with my UE Boom. Same thing. It pairs, but audio just keeps coming out of main speakers.

It may be an amp firmware issue based on some other posts. Check for an update.

What if you turn the speaker selector on the amp off? I have to do that on one of mine as the headphone socket doesnt switch it. Never tried bluetooth headphones since I think its input only on it.

Firmware is up to date, and it definitely has a bluetooth transmitter.

@richms I can't see any setting along the lines of "speaker selector".

EDIT: Page 115 of the manual is all the info I can find. And these are the exact steps I have taken.

I am the owner of a Yamaha AVR RX-V1085.

Checking the AU/NZ manual for your RX-V485 - page 66:

Note: * Sounds will be [sic] also output from the speakers connected to the unit.

RX-V485/HTR-4072/RX-D485 Firmware Update Ver.1.61

Thanks for that, but that's essentially the same instructions that I've already done. And I'm already on the latest firmware.

I emailed Yamaha support, and they got back to me very quickly suggesting I can do it via their MusiCast smartphone app.

It seems odd to have to use a smartphone app to do this, so I'm not holding my breath just yet, but I'll give this a try tonight.

What source are you sending to the Airpods?

Basically, bluetooth output on your AVR is copy protected on HDMI / Optical and Digital Coax.

This means you'll need a bluetooth device that supports SCMS-T copy protection... from brands like Sony, or Bose (Bose Q35's etc). If your Airpods don't support SCMS-T copy protection you'll be able to receive bluetooth but not from copy protected sources - meaning you'll get AM/FM, RCA, net radio, Deezer, Tidal, Spotify etc, but not HDMI etc.

Thanks @Dunnersfella That certainly appears to be part of what's happening.

When I connect to the AirPods (or UE Boom) via the MusicCast app it says:

"The connected speaker does not support content that is copyright protected".

And when I select ANY source it says:

"Cannot transmit via bluetooth because the content is copyright protected".

It did this for Spotify and FM radio as well though (although, that's probably redundant as what I want it for is stuff coming via an HDMI source).

This really annoys me though, because none of the actual content is I've tested is copy protected. Why is it adding copy protection over the HDMI?

It's also one of the dumbest things I've heard in a long while, that it prevents you from listening to content over headphones for copyright reasons.

EDIT: A google of "Yamaha SCMS-T" indicates that Yamaha recievers don't support ANY bluetooth transmission to non SCMS-T capable devices. That is just dumb.

FYI, I have the same problem with my RX-D485 and my AirPods. I can pair fine but no audio.

You can change the connection type between 'type 1, type 2 and type 3' in the same area where you pair the earphones to the AVR.

Have you tried those?

I have just bought a Yamaha RX-V485 as well and was trying to get it working with my Apple Airpods. It will actually output audio to them after connection them using the Bluetooth transmitter and device search function but only on the tuner input which matches what Dunnersfella said.

I also have a UE Boom and although that connects to the unit I don't get any audio on it at all.

The bluetooth connection menu is very basic. For audio sending, there is only the option to turn the bluetooth transmitter on plus search for a device.

A list of detected devices appears and you simply select one. If all goes well a 'connected' message appears and the audio comes out through the headphones.
