Why when I record something in 5.1 does it come out as stereo on playback, any ideas?

Some more information wouldf be useful.

What software are you using? What codec are you using for AC3? AC3filter? Are you using 5.1 analog or SPDIF output?

Most software seems to struggle playing back AC3 5.1 content at present because both AAC and AC3 audio is recorded in the TS dump and it defaults to AAC rather than AC3 on playback.

sorry, Mysky Hdi connected to reciever via Optical Then from reciever to TV via RCA.

When I watch Sky and 5.1 is active (I hear it correctly through speakers as you would expect) it's fine

If I then playback on recording the same program it only plays back as stereo

What is the difference in the Sky settings for Audio between Dolby and Mpeg?  I have it set to Dolby on SPDIF
