It looks really slick and professional, blows even VMC out of the water, which while smooth and easy, is kinda boring...

If only you could watch/record/pause live tv with it... Although from a few threads Ive seen, there are several peeps working on this. Support for H.264 playback already exists though

There is a MediaPortal version of that - not quite as slick, and you need to use a 3rd party app to create the menu entries, but it works. If only XBMC could use MPTV as a backend.... between this and MediaStream it's a fairly (bloody) attractive setup.

Yes,

I've often wondered why they did not try to mod/enhance XBMC to work as a "Mediaportal Extender".

My guess is that the xbox hardware (primarily the cpu and gpu capabilities) were deemed as too low-spec for such a project initiative to go ahead.

I'm sure it would have been considered, especially given that the original XBMC developers left the project to start Mediaportal.

IMHO, the hardware is probably good enough, up to 720p.

ps. Yes, a modded xbox (running the NTSC flashed eprom) can support 1080i resolutions, but that does not mean it has the horses to actually sustain a video-stream at that resolution. I do suspect that with the (still fairly recent) advent of h.264 (Mpeg4) we could probably get closer (than with mpeg2).

It should be possible these days, considering XBMC now runs on linux, windows and OSX as well. I'd be running it on windows or linux if it could be a MPTV or MythTV front end. There is talk in the forums about using it as a mythfront end, but it's all vey old or vauge (no mention at all in the docs that I can find).

Left with MediaPortal for now which is fine, but not quite as swishy as it could be.

I was just reading on Duncans (author) site, he has been brought! He will be releasing a new version of Aeon called Stark, it looks mighty fine i must say (screen below) and then thats it for him and xbmc.. Although the source code is being released and left to the xbmc skinning community to continue on. He is under NDA at the moment so won't devuldge details, but at a guess i would say apple have gotten to him, the appletv interface looks like a primary school student designed it and needs a redesign.. I can't think of anyone better! But its a shame, i hope he continues skinning xbmc in his spare time..
