Hi!

TV3 had the Star Wars I/II/III a couple of months ago, over three Saturdays. At that time I was experiencing some issues with the HTPC, actually was not properly up and running during the first one, and yet not properly set up for the second one. It was fixed just in time for the third one. So I recorded it, all is OK.

Is there any chance for someone to help me with the other two parts (I and II)? I do not see any breach here, as whoever has them, has them from a public tv station (anyone could've record it), and it will not be displayed publicly. And more important, no money will change hands or bank accounts :-)

If there is anyone willing to help me, you may send a private message. I will bring my own HDD for the transfer (4Gb/h x 3h = approx 12Gb each movie). I do not need the ads removed, just a good quality HD recording.

I really hope this post does NOT breach any rules and does NOT cause trouble for anyone...

I'm not sure that's legal. Someone else will chime in, I'm sure. You're not really allowed to tape TV to keep, I think it's only allowed to watch within a reasonable timeframe afterwards (i.e. timeshifting). Maybe things have changed...

Interesting topic, anyone know what the law says? I mean is it leagal to record TV? if so what if I show that recording to a friend? What if I lend him the "tape"? What if he lends it to a friend? What if make another 3 copies and give those to friends? What if I split the tape up in to millions of bits and distribute it on the internet to tens of millions of "friends"? Where does the law kick in? Is everyone with a PVR (or VCR) breaking the law?

It is now officially legal to record TV for personal use, only for time shifting purposes and must be deleted within a reasonable time. Details

Can't recall the details, but it has plently of allowance for fair use, including cicumnavigating DRM measures where reasonable. Generally seems to be a progressive piece of legislation.

However not sure where it leaves the OP.

I can't recall anyone that I know of being arrested/fined for recording a TV show and then not deleting it.

To the OP, good luck, I would definately have helped you out if I had recorded the programs, but alas, I did not.

I was pointing out what the law says. I am aware that in reality no-one is actually going to get into trouble, and I am sure many people here have been recording TV before this law change.
This new law was hardly publised and I think thats a shame. I think it is a good law, and clarifies a lot of things.

To the OP, good luck, I would definately have helped you out if I had recorded the programs, but alas, I did not.

I cant recall anyone being arrested for pirating MP3s on the net either, but it doesnt make it ok to talk about it here anymore then sharing a taped tv show is.

Thank you all for the interest.

I did not expect to start such a debate...
I downloaded the "Copyright Amendment Bill" to have a look through it, out of curiosity... there is a lot of reading in there (61 pages) and being all in legal terms does not help the ordinary people a lot in better understanding it... I will come back if I find some interesting sections, relevant to the topic.

Isn't it the same thing? Like saying, no one would complain if you dubbed a copy of a CD onto tape for someone. It may be true, but still doesn't make it right (although maybe that is allowed now).

How is this different? I am not advocating the copying of a CD but the copying of a FTA broadcast. Where is the revenue loss from somebody making a copy and handing it on when the recipient was not able to make that (legal) recording themselves?

I didn't realise revenue loss was the basis of legality. I suppose as long as a movie's been on TV then it is OK to copy the DVD from that point onwards? Same with songs on the radio? Just playing devil's advocate... I hope aucklander managed to get those recordings, but I also hope he deletes them within reasonable time period after watching
