Hi everyone,

So I posted a week ago about buying some budget / cheap Lumi speakers which was highly NOT recommended... so I really appreciated everyone’s advice and going to stay well clear.. the other thing that I kind of picked up, is if I can get away from wall / ceiling mounted units it would be a good option.. I do really like the idea of in in wall / in ceiling speakers because they look clean but I think the front L and R speakers will be 100% floor standing. So anyway I’ve been looking around and came across these

https://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/home-audio/speakers-and-stands/home-theatre-sets/auction-2596559507.htm

Because I got so much from my last post my next question is - what is everyone’s thoughts on this set and also is the Marantz SR5013 suitable to run this is it going to be slightly too small and I’m better to go slightly larger receiver? I have heard that if Amp is too small it can damage the speakers / AMP?

Kind regards

M

If you're looking at spending that much, wait until the lockdown is over and get into a HiFi store and listen to your options.

Sadly, you won't find much in the way of Jamo as since they are now owned by Klipsch they are pretty much the 'poor cousin' in NZ and only JB HiFi seem to have any on display and they are ANCIENT and typically with poked in tweeters etc.

Good idea to look @ 2nd hand IMO as I have scored some GREAT 2nd hand audio gear over the years and none have been duds - e.g. 3 sets of NZ made Image speakers, 2 x Rotel amps, Yamaha/Wharfedale HT set up - most at 1/5th to 1/10th of RRP.

TMe is one option - but deals can also be found on FB eg. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2489765884595568/

You need to look at the efficiency/sensitivity specs of the speakers to get more of an idea how much power you will need into them. There is a significant difference between speakers that are 88db per watt and 93 dB per watt, but it looks like near nothing when comparing numbers that close together.

Then checking that they are per watt and not at a certain voltage that gets them more than 1 watt because of their impedance dip at the freq that they tested at.

A single power rating on a speaker is pretty close to meaningless because you don't know what they were actually measuring to get that power. You will almost never be putting that much power into a speaker, and if you do it will only be on the peaks.

Then you don't really know what the peak that the amp can put out because of the insistence of people in wanting "RMS watts" which is generally done on a sinewave which is not applicable to typical listening. A greater peak power will let you run the average power higher without distortion.

Audio numbers are full of BS and trickery. Only way to be sure is to hook it up and listen, or to get an amp with way more power than you will ever need and never use its full potential.

Hi again,

Would setting the speakers on the marantz to small rather than large help take load off the amp and put more bass into the sub? Giving the front speakers “cleaner power?” If that’s what it would be called

Speakers. are 6ohm long term power 160w - marantz is good from what I can read 2 channel 140w - 6ohms.. I would never thrash them to as loud as they can go but just trying to get my head around everything

Cheers

Setting speakers to small is the starting point for almost every surround sound system.

Re: matching the Marantz to the Jamo's... sure, it will be fine.

However, again I would say to you, listen to speakers before buying them.

Otherwise you're effectively buying a car without test driving it...

Yup - I'd be biding my time and buying locally.

It's a lot of money to spend on something that may / may not be right.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I guess if push comes to shove I could add a amplifier in the pre out like the marantz MM 7025 and this would power the front two speakers?

Of course.

It's not a case of figuring out if you can power the speakers, more if you like the sound of them.

That auction looks like a bit of mix-and-match mess. Great if you know what you are looking for, probably a waste of money if you are just starting to dip your toe in. For that amount, you could get yourself a decent L/C/R; start there and build your way up by adding on quality pieces as they become available/budget allows.

I'm with Dunnersfella; unless you have already spent some time already getting familiar with what brands you like/don't like, I would wait until you can go hit up your local hi-fi shops when they re-open. Otherwise you are throwing money down blindly just to get yourself a product that may give you literal headaches. And as someone already pointed out, audio gear, like a lot of niche hobby products, doesn't resell well in NZ.

Every brand has their own in-house sound and some can be a little more in-your-face than others. Klipsch speakers, for example, are famous for their dividing opinions; some love the horn sound, others hate it. And some speakers are more suited to critical music listening, but don't do so well for HT. And vice-versa...

Listening to speakers first isnt as usefull as you would think

speakers will sound considerably different in your house compared to in a shop or at someone elses house
most have no idea what to listen for, many cant even hear that a tweeter is blown : Ive come across that a few times
And your perception of whats good will be biased based on what youre used to hearing in speakers.
Hence the loooove of unrealistic boooomy bass .

unless you have been listening to high quality speaker for many months, you wont be able to tell if speakers are good quality.
Thats not audio snobbery, its just a fact. Its the same with many things .

Its the same a judging a new TV by checking what they look like in the shops , after youve been watching a bad old TV for years.
In the shop, playing cartoons blasting unrelistic colors, they look great (sometimes).

If buying used, check each tweeter. Put your ear next to the tweeter to make sure its working . Never assume they work 100% despite what the
seller says. I learnt that the hard way. :-)
