Can someone recommend a good media player to play AVI files with?

SKY have pi**ed me off recently with their rescheduling, so I'm having to download F1 races from the internet. I have Windows Media Player and Power DVD on my laptop, and just connect it to the TV when required.

Are there any media players out there that offer similar features to a DVD player, like fast forward, time skip (30s, 1min...), and can they be controlled using the keyboard.

How about a PS3?  I watch a ton/ tonne of downloaded content on my PS3 - TV, movies... Cool  apparently the xbox can do this too... Undecided

Zoomplayer. It is probably the most configurable player on the market. You can adjust, well, practically everything inside the options: ie. set your own time values for skip, jump & seek. Find it here

Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC)
- Good quality
- Uses internal filters
- Built in hardware acceleration of H264/VC1

Zoom Player
- Very configurable
- Uses external filters (eg PDVD)

VLC
- Uses internal filters
- Quality not as good
- Plays just about anything including corrupt files

My Pick is to get MPC-HC and have VLC for a backup of anything that doesn't play with MPC-HC
Both MPC-HC and VLC work well straight out of the box, and since they use internal filters by default you don't need any codec packs.

Thanks. I'm currently downloading them all and will try them out.

$800 for a PS3 to play some AVI files seems a bit overkill, don't you think!

I've used VLC for a long time now, just handles anything you want to throw at it.

I have one also but don't use it as a media player now since I bought Popcorn Hour. The PS3 plays avi files fine but of course for $800 you also get a BR player and also by the way, a really killer games console!

On my PC I tend to use VLC and for the DVB-T broadcasts, PowerDVD8

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Not if you win powerball tomorrow Laughing

If you ask a "what's best/can you recommend..." question, there's always plenty of correct answers Wink

It's also very important to note that you can disable the internal filters and select external filters to use also, where you can edit the merits etc.

Should have been more precise in my original request. I meant media players for my laptop, but wasn't specific enough. PS3 is a nice idea, but son has a PS2 and I don't have time to play on that. Also bought a DVD recorder a couple of months back, and would be a shame to let it sit. Maybe if the price drops a bit more, it may be worth another look.

Sky Update: Well, Sky did it again at the weekend with the F1 qualifying, so I phoned them and told them to shove it where the sun don't shine (not quite those words, but you get the idea). Turns out they have a SLA where their manager is supposed to contact the customer within 48 hours of raising a complaint. If that's the case, I'm still waiting on the call from about the Singapore grand prix recently and the Silverstone grand prix from 2007.

Now all I have to do is figure out is the best way to watch the F1 torrents I now have to download.

Just confirmed Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC) has customizable keyboard shortcuts for pretty much everything. That combined with the built in codecs should be everything you need.

Not sure what you mean there, but do you really expect any better from them? The only NZ corporation that has a worse support history is one that deals in mobiles Sealed

Been a petrol-head most of my life (right into rallying from way back) but they can stick F1 "where the sun don't shine" until the FIA start treating anyone else other Ferrari with more respect; most specifically, the name of one of New Zealand's favourite motoring sons. Their new, young, main driver may be a bit of a dick, but that's no excuse for their recent treatment.

Sorry. UK expression! Something akin to sticking it up their a**e.
