My TV only has two HDMI sockets but I need a third one to cope with a Chromecast. Is there any way to get one of the HDMI sockets to have dual inputs. At first I thought an HDMI splitter was what I want but they seems to work the other way to drive two video displays.

What you want is a HDMI switch, which is probably what you were thinking of. A quick Google search will set you on your way to getting you what you need.

$10 at kmart buys a good enough hdmi switch with 3 inputs. Happy with my one at 1080p.
