Hi Everyone,

Those with large DVD and Blu-ray collections, how are you storing these?

I've been using regular bookshelves and I'm fast running out of space and got them double stacked etc.

I'm looking to get something like this http://www.dvdcabinet.com/CD-storage-DVD-storage.htm but can't seem to find a place in NZ (need to hold around 1500 discs)

Any suggestions?

Personally, I'd say it depends on whether you need regular access to them. Mine are stored at the bottom of wardrobes and cupboards and on some shelving, but I've ripped them all so the way they're stacked isn't a problem as they seldom move.

Maybe some kind of cabinet from Warehouse Stationary or Bunnings or similar ?

Ours have always been stored vertically, on narrow bookcases out of direct sunlight. Some are over 20 years old and as far as I'm aware, haven't shown any sign of degradation, including some early titles that had uneven surface colour caused by the process of bonding layers together. I have received disks which were faulty, that I strongly suspect were not stored in optimal conditions.

I have nowhere near as many disks as you do, but if I did I'd be looking at a cabinet solution like that, possibly with index cards slotted in to make finding titles easier. Almost all of my DVDs are on my RAID now, available from any TV in the house, so the need for bookcases of titles has largely gone.

300+ in plastic storage boxes in the wardrobe, along with all my CDs.

Our next house will have my dedicated media room where they will all come out on display. The dvds for use, the cds mainly for nostalgia reasons.

Mine are stored in two places.

The physical disks are stored in cardboard boxes somewhere at the back of the garage, as a backup. Essentially haven't touched them for years.

Digital copies (via ripping) all sit on my NAS, networked to media clients on all the TVs, with software (Plex) to take of appropriate metadata and eye candy etc.

All my disc players, except for two networked recorders (Panasonic), are in the garage as well. Haven't actually played a physical disk for years. Rarely buy them now. When I do it's a straight rip to NAS for actual viewing, then toss the disc in the garage.

I ripped all my dvd to NAS using handbrake on ubuntu which was easy to bypass region locking and watching viz plex

Never got round to ripping the blurays despite getting a blu ray drive with current pc ?5 years ago.

Any experts in ripping blue rays?

I suddenly became worried about cd rot yesterday when I came across two cd with photos scaned by a relative after my grandparents died.

Luckily 2012 was a good year for data cds as ran perfectly and file uploaded to nas and cloud.

i brought 1000s of cheap blank cd/dvd over the years and no problems yet

but had 1 "commercial" music cd do it
