I had always noticed something amiss about The Last Jedi on my HDR tv ... well now I found the reason why! I wonder how many other movies do this to annoy me ... smh

Likewise is it real 4K or upscaled?  A lot of older film source content was actually scanned from film at 4K or more resolution, so 4K has allowed legitimate higher res releases than DVD for example.s

Red Dead Redemption 2 was a similar fake style of HDR.  That's why in some situations it was better to play with HDR turned off.  Tends to be the case when it's not designed for HDR at the top.  Same with how post-conversion 3D was always worse than natively filmed 3D.

Even in newer stuff shot digitally at 4k, it is quite common for it to be finished in 2k because it is a lot cheaper and faster to do post stuff, digital effects, render CGI etc at 2k than 4k. The upscaling to 4k is not your grandma's TV upscaling though, it is professional work.

To the point, FlatpanelsHD recently ran a story about "Fake" HDR.

I just vomited a bit and had nasty flashbacks.  God that was terrible.
