So, with Apple promoting 4K YouTube as a feature that would finally come to ATV 4K with the release of TVOS 14 I quickly updated my ATV when I got home last night only to be disappointed that there is still no 4K YouTube available.

After doing some digging online I find that even though Apple have enabled VP9 support under TVOS 14 it still requires the App developer to update their 3rd party app to take advantage of it.

Have Apple seriously left themselves open to being left at the whim of Google to update their ATV 4K app to enable a feature that Apple have been selling for months? Google could seriously leave them hanging by refusing to update the App? Its not like Google have been active on the ATV side as the current App still uses the old outdated UI.

Yeah the consensus seems to be it’s all up to Google now to update the app.

I think it will happen at some point. It may not be at the speed we all want it to be, just like how it took ages before there was a proper YouTube app on the Apple TV. Plus as you say it still uses the older UI so there doesn’t appear to be too much interest from Google in getting things updated at any great pace.

I agree that it's disappointing not to have it on day one of the new release but the iOS youtube app must have also needed an update and that has been updated so I still have hope that Google will sort the ATV pretty soon. Perhaps they will do the new UI at the same time.

People with long memories will know Google gave an API for Youtube to be used on early smart TVs and Blu-ray players. They promptly broke that API for no good reason around the time Chromecast was launched.

I just can’t believe that Apple spent months promoting a feature that they had no control over. Did they honestly think that by openly advertising it they could bully Google into updating their app?

There’s only one loser out of this and it’s not Google. People who have bought an ATV 4K since the TVOS 14 announcement would have cause to return it.
