I am wanting to have a play with a project I have been considering for a while. I don't want to spend too much but am looking for a pair of second hand bookshelf speakers (as when I am done I'll probably onsell), ideally some that punch above their weight for a couple or few hundred dollars.

Does anyone have any recommendations on specific models or brands I should look for? I'd like to stay around $200 for a pair and so long as they sound good, that will be OK. General Music..

Any advice much appreciated.

There's some Edifier ones on Mighty Ape for around that much. I've been looking lately for speakers for my new PC.

I was quite hoping to get a decent jump in performance by picking up a pair second hand..

At that relatively low price, what about a pair of Wharfedale Diamonds 9.1s? Pretty common and will offer decent enough performance.

I have those in my home office - they are fine for reasonable quality background music while working, but don't fit the bill as 'punching above their weight' for dedicated music listening. They are physically quite small boxes, so the bass is somewhat lacking (might do okay if paired to a amp/EQ that compensates)

I'd second the wharfedale diamonds - they are decent and fairly common so shouldn't be too hard to pick up second hand.

Thats what I bought for my workshop setup. They tend to be a popular item on trademe, so dont get caught in a bidding war, another pair will be up on trademe in a week or so.
Good quality , great sound .
Mission bookshelf's would be another good choice .

ALLWAYS check each speaker before paying , check for blown tweeters & pushed in speaker domes . Ive been caught out when the seller didnt realise a tweeter was blown (I learnt my lesson)

Yup, thank you. They are a bit lower end than I was aiming for, and also, I can't collect from there :)

Three brands that I believe punch above their weight for performance vs dollars are Wharfedale, Mission and Q Acoustics. Any of those that you see at your budget 2nd hand would be ideal.

I found a pair of Emotiva B1 bookself speakers, anyone have experience with those? I suspect the guy would let me have them for $300, which is a bit above what I was hoping to spend, but if they are fantastic it's possibly worth considering?

The emotiva are not bad but the Diamond 9.1 posted on TM above are far better sounding.

The Diamond's are an older speaker now... but at least you will have no issues looking at them compared to Emotiva's. How someone can stuff up such a simple design is beyond me.

Again, check the tweeters on the Wharfedale's.

A retailer once showed me his stock of 'spare' Wharfedale speakers so he could rob them for parts... the magnets on the tweeters of the Reva's are an embarrassment! But I would suspect for the money, the build of the Diamond 9's will be spot on.

I also have the Edifier r1700bt speakers. Have them setup as my TV speakers which also does my gaming through the Xbox and my home audio when I stream music to them, in my opinion they sound awesome for the price and size.

Got a pair of Diamond 9.1 Whafedale Bookshelf speakers apparently in great condition for $185. Hopefully, they are good. Just got to sort out the amp. :)
