Hi all,
I have been given some video files that are X264 with the extention .mkv (which I understand is basically a shell extention)
However when I play them they either stop or skip back to the start at random points. These points are stable i.e. it always does it at the same point in the file and to be able to watch it I have to skip to just past the error point.
I am running MCE 2005 using the CCC pack. Hardware - dual core 3.0, 3 gig ram, 8500 graphics card, dual tuners etc.
any advice?

Sounds like the files are broken at those points. By skipping past you are missing the data corruption. No way to fix really other then getting them again.

Try playing the file(s) with GOM Media Player or Media Player Classic. Both players are free.
