Looking for a speaker set that can be driven from a laptop to fill a small hall type venue dimensions 12.5m wide 12m long height about 3m with about 70 people in the venue.

Want it to be used for dancing only doesn't matter if it has mic input or flashing lights etc

budget up to about 400 but cheaper is better.

Looking for good volume as opposed to fantastic quality of sound.

Do not want to get an amp and the size does not matter :)

Otherwise you’re looking for the biggest, highest powered system you can get within your budget and hopefully it’ll be enough.

I don’t think you’ll get anything new for that money apart from the likes of a large Sony Bluetooth speaker which I’m unsure as to if it will go loud enough.

You'll likely just need a RCA to 3.5mm adapter which can be found at most hardware stores for around $10 (assuming your laptop has a 3.5mm output).

I would imagine its one of the best options within your budget, it should sound alright but that's subjective and also depends on the type of music you're listening to.

I have done proper PA system installs for halls, it wont be the same as one of these as this system is designed for a home user/environment and the quality difference will be significant.

I was at one of those corporate boxing nights where they used a BIG Panasonic boom-type system (you know the ones that were popular 5-6 years ago with MASSIVE speakers, all of it was made in Brazil).

We simply couldn't hear anything apart from some vague, distorted, droning bass.

Effectively, human beings soak up sound like sponges and the acoustic of large spaces like halls offer maddening issues re: delays / hot spotting etc etc.

i got this cable and while it works the sound is so distorted.

The sound is only bad when using the cable.

Are there any other ways to connect the lap top to the system.

I notice the lap top has a usb port which I use for headphones could that be utilized ?

Does it make any difference to the distortion if you turn the amplifier down and the laptop volume up?

If you have the volume too low on the laptop, and turn the Amplifier up you will get distortion. Same goes the other way too, Laptop too high and Amplifier too low.

Is this a one off or an ongoing thing? If it's a one off - hire gear.

If it's an ongoing thing, you'd be better off getting some 'proper' small PA speakers - you won't get anything decent for under $400 though. Perhaps look at something like the Samson XP300 as a starting point. Very much low end gear, but would do what you want, and gives you the ability to connect a few devices, use a mic etc. Maybe go into a store like the Rockshop and have a chat with them about some options.

I’ve just sent a PM. If the sound isn’t distorted when using the inbuilt CD player or radio then it’s likely a faulty cable or a bad connection in the amplifier.

I’ve flicked the OP a offer to come and take a look in person as I’m just down the road.
