I have:

Panasonic OLED 65 GZ1000

Synology: DS220+

Yamaha RXV 4A (looking to purchase)

Just wondering, before I purchase the Yamaha, if I have all three devices are connected to LAN via ethernet, would it be possible to use Synology Video Station to stream video via the Yamaha for viewing on OLED?

If yes, could initiate the stream via a Synology app on my iPhone?

Nope.

TV is client and NAS is server, client would initiate. TCP stream is between TV and NAS and not associated with AV receiver.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I’ve the same TV and NAS, but use Plex running on an Amazon Fire. (So far I’m impressed by Plex, having been a Kodi user for donkeys. It is annoying that Panasonic don’t offer Plex on their TVs.)

Is there any particular reason you want to use the receiver, as opposed to either a media player (eg ATV, Amazon Fire, Mi Box...) or using something like DLNA (wouldn’t you be able to select the NAS as the source and the TV as the display via one of the Synology DS apps or a DLNA-enabled app, or just access the content directly from the TV)?

I currently use Panasonic DLNA to access the Synology, but the Panasonic interface is less than ideal and is limited in functionality. I really like the look of Synology's Video Station, so was hoping I could stream from it to the TV without purchasing a separate media player as intermediary. I need to replace my existing HT receiver, so was wondering if the Yamaha could come into the mix. Thanks for the URL, I will read this later tonight.

So I've just finished installing Video Station and sorting out video play via the DS Video app; it looks somewhat like Plex, and did an ok job of finding cover art etc (and has the big advantage of picking up all videos - unlike Plex, damn it.)

One thing to check is to ensure the appropriate privileges are ticked for the relevant user account in the Video Station settings (otherwise I was only able to see Chromecast devices; it also doesn't seem like these privileges can be granted to the admin account either).

Streaming videos to the TV via the DS Video app works fine; you'll be a bit disappointed to still see that incredibly old-fashioned Panasonic interface (those 'teletext' colours!) pops up as the video begins to play etc. Personally, I much prefer the clean interface when casting via the Chromecast via the same app, but it's certainly totally usable if you're keen on avoiding any other media player/interface.

Thanks, appreciated, I'll have a play in the weekend and report back.

So I've installed Video Station on the DS220+ and DS video app on my iPhone. The DS video does a great job replacing the UI of the TV DLNA menu, but still relies on the TV as the DLNA device. I guess where the TV falls short, I can use VLC app and stream via Chromecast, so I have options.
