I bought a 52" LCD of trademe at a pretty good price. As with any bargain it comes with its risks. :-( After a couple of months of flawless TV watching I am now faced with a problem.

The TV starts up most of the times but sometimes it will start up and momentarily show the picture before the screen goes completely blank. Audio is still present though. I can power off the TV and start it again and it will do the same thing i.e. show picture and go black again. The probem seems to go away if I was to leave the TV off for about 24 hours.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

gehenna: what sort of input are you using?

Hi,

I have inputs from my sky decoder (coaxial) and also my mvix player (hdmi). The problem happens with BOTH source.

I honestly don't think this is an input issue as when the TV fails I hear it like "powering" up with a low whine and then when it blacks out the whiny noise stops. Almost seems like as if it doesn't have enough power. Not sure if that makes any sense. :-(

Get a bright flashlight and shine it on the screen when the picture dies and see if you can see the picture (bring up the SkyTV guide as a makeshift "test screen" will make it easier to see). If you can see a picture then it sounds like the backlight invertor is faulty (and the whine is a symptom of this). It's usually possible to have it replaced without too much fuss ...

I have too many computers ... and you do too ... it's all my fault ;-)
