Whats the best process that people have found to grab a part of a recorded show, downconvert to 720p if its 1080i and then save as something playable in most places (.mp4 or .avi - dont care really)

I've been using (rarely I may add, haven't converted much) Windows Movie Maker to edit and burn to dvd.

Being a Mac user I should try the new Handbrake build

For editing - i'd really like something that will easily allow me to edit ads out of TS files without rencoding. Cant find anything simple and free.

For encoding - the new handbrake build is awesome, does a great job of reencoding them, but i want to edt the ads and other stuff out before i reencode.
Handbrake isnt just for macs, the latest snapshot runs on windows, linux and mac. Unfortunately its been taken down, perhaps this means that 0.9.4 is imminent?

Is their anything at all that can do this? I dont mind buying quality software for a reasonable price.

I use handbrake to encode to mkv then use a free mkv cutter/joiner to cut out the ads.

I would re-encodong before cutting out ads and recording buffers, etc, but if you just want to retain the recording integrity, I can recommend something that works for me (Vista SP1)

http://www.h264tscutter.de/show_artikel.php?id=5

Just be sure to check the requirements!

Found overall that the performance was pretty good - initially thought saving the product was taking a while but considering it's about 11mbps, 10mins certainly seemed reasonable (intel e6420 was going full speed) for a 90 min movie. Only had one issue with picture lagging behind the audio due to being in too much of a rush to check the preview of the cut.

Hope it works for others like it did for me!

Whys that? I figured you may as well cut out the stuff that doesnt need to be encoded as this will cut down on the encoding time.

I tested that program, and when i load a TS file i get "System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Value of '0' is not valid for 'Value'. 'Value' should be between 'minimum' and 'maximum'." and it quits.

Any alternatives?

I hear you!

I only claim a little bit of experience with these things and I found that sacrificing encoding time over the probability of a muffed product was worth it. Could it be something to do with translating the edit points into another format?

EDIT: re the error you got, that sounded like something I got before I installed haali media splitter...

I prefer TS Packet Editor which doesnt croak and has more checking tools. You don't need the Haali Media splitter but if you don't have it, you won't see previews of your editing on screen.

My main issue with all tools (I use TS Packet Editor, x264 and Tsmuxer) is that when the video stream is clean, it works fine. But if there are any dropouts or glitches in the ts stream, then you lose audio/video sync and it's pretty hard to get it back across the length of the file.

I tried TS packet editor, and while it was sucessful in making an edited .ts file, it had nothing to do with the part I had eventually managed to get selected in the fields at the top of the screen, even when I put it into the list at the bottom.

The UI for it is the most dire thing I have seen recently.

Is there no .ts input method for a sensible application like premiere or after effects? IMO that would be the easiest way.

Yes it occasionally doesn't cut exactly where you think it should. The docs indicate that could be a problem with the DS filter you are using to display the file being edited. The UI isn't great but I like the fact that it can scan a file showing glitches and other problems that are going to bite you when you re-encode.

I think somebody else metnioned that they are able to edit files in VirtualDub by loading the splitter from Cyberlink. I can do that but Virtualdub doesn't appear to have a way of saving the ts file - you have to re-encode or save it as raw video which takes a ton of space.

Yeah im suprised that there isn't a program that is easy to use that can cut up a h264 ts file, and leave the output as TS without and reencoding.

Seriously Guys, I have no problem with h264tscutter, but I know that there are other tools that I can't use that others have said works for them. The next version of Movie Maker maybe?

Both TS Packet Editor and H264cutter can edit files without compressing. TS Packet Editor is more tolerant of bad files caused by transmission glitches. H264cutter in my experience will crash with .net errors if the files have problems.

The trick as the OP noted is, how to re-encode them to something smaller (3.3G for a 42 minute show can eat up HD space pretty quickly).  With a good file I have been able to compress the files to about 1G using x264.exe but if the file has glitches I will normally encounter audio/video sync issues since once you re-encode you lose the timestamps in the file that maintain sync.

I also used to use x264, and found only issues with shows I was taking ads out of.

When, on some days of the year, they show something with no ads, then I can happily re-encode with no fear. Hence my previous comment about re-encoding first, and then cut later. The ONLY complaint I have with x264 (or just re-encoding in general) is the time it takes to re-encode with multipass. I also used to use a profile that would allow playback on the xbox360.

Since VMC is no longer the flavour of the month, and with the advent of 720p/1080i and DD, I am happy to keep the size after cutting ads out.

I haven't tried TS packet editor, but am willing to try if I become dissatisfied with h263tscutter. I have tried comskip too but of course there lies the issue with our broadcasts not complying with that!

I am not so concerned with encode time but losing sync. On TV3 with ac3 audio I will occasionally experience audio dropouts which are iinaudible and dont cause any problems if the stream is just cut because of.the timestamps but cause iissues when remuxed with say tsmuxer or mkvmerge..
