We have had our Bravia 55" for 8 years now, still going strong.

However we really want the benefit of some extra pixels (I see up to 1440p, so 4k is fine) and some HDR.

A 55" 4k HDR is between $1200-1500

We would LOVE an OLED, the blacks are clearly deeper, I often watch Netflix on my phone for the OLED even though its not HDR.

But they are between $3-4k.

Any thought and suggestion?

I did consider a 4k HDR Projector for Movie use and keeping the old 1080p Bravia as a photo display and daytime use TV.

Was recommended this viewsonic as cheap but cheerful, its a 4/5 level type projector, 4k hdr 3200 lumens. Im sure its not perfect. Its $900 in US and $1800 in NZD.

Very interesting review. When breaking out the gaming laptop to compare its 320hz to 240hz to 60hz.

When they slowed it down the only difference seen is between 320hz and 60hz and not likely something anybody would notice in real life.

Ive always told people I dont see much passed 30fps, they just don't believe us old "slow eyes" exist. But 60hz I definitely do not in real world, thats why Im not phased about 120hz screens, 120hz yes if it is a phone and has a 120hz touch refresh rate, otherwise the touch speed is not noticeable, but not general display speed.

Even the 16ms on the older model didnt produce any ghosting over the 4.2ms model. Not sure if thats related to the projector tech vs if you had 16ms lcd screen vs 4ms.

Also it drops to 1080p HDR for 240ms mode, not a big drama. HDR and OLED are the 2 big winners for me in visuals, i do see to 1440p, but beyond that its the same and Im happy with 60hz generally speaking. So the 4k HDR 60hz mode might be fine for my Xbox gaming.

there is no consumer TV that refreshes more than 60Hz!

I agree, in display terms for movies & TV OLED is king

Is this still true in 2021? New TV screens seem to advertise 120Hz native refresh rates useful for PS5/XSX etc

Yeah, curious too as for sme thats a big part of new gen gaming. And is a huge part of that projector sale, 240hz, 4,2ms

So looks like Im stuck with old faithful, ugggh, I hate seeing new TVs.

Ive become interetsed in these short throw home cinema projectors. clearly aimed for movies not gaming, but solves a hassle we have had with projectors in the day. Also the lumens these days. I remember my first $3.5k projector was only 2000 lumen DLP. Times havnt changed dramatically but definitely changed.

What is the best affordable 65" OLED HDR UHD then?

OLEDs are still pretty expensive in the 65inch range - the new LG model the C1 is their 'midrange' OLED and it is around $5,200 if you can find it in stock.

You can find some of last years LG CX for around $4,000 in stores that still have them.

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/by-size/65-inch - has a few ideas on TVs although not all are stocked in NZ and several have slightly different names

Yes indeed.

We wont be able to afford one until they are around $2k. Which could be another 5 years off.

Thats why I thought maybe a high lumens 4k HDR projector might at least give us some joy from a size perspective. My eyes are failing and Im not someone who remember glasses so Im often having to sit half way between the couch and he TV. You dont get that with the OG "Bigscreen" effect. And the next gen gaming modes included look decent for $2k.

I do want OLED, desperately combined with HDR and the marginal gain i get from 4k

But I dont really want to wait 5 years. But then in 5 yer the $2k TV or Projector will be worth $400 maybe.

Ugggh "tears his hair out" ;-p

I thought, maybe what about a used OLED? But then, unlike in Aus with EBay, people on Trademe try to get 90% of the cost of a 2yr old TV. Good deals are rare.

Essentially 4k HDR is not worth the cost over the 1080p non HDR?

Then, the only reason the 4k HDR Projector would be worth it is for the wow factor? Which is different to the high quality contrast factor of OLED. Im curious if HDR even in 1000lm still works well on non OLED because it lacks the blacks for contrast?

I have had a pretty good SONY 4K HDR LED panel - a x900e from a couple years ago. I think it's replacement in the market is now called the x900j or x90j still around $4K for 65inch.

The x900 got plenty bright and the blacks were pretty good as they have full array local dimming. HDR was good and excellent for gaming. The only downside was narrower viewing angles as the picture looked a bit washed out if you were sitting on a decent angle to the screen.

Yeah Im just using OLED as a "generalisation" i know sammy and panna have different names. regardless they all hella expensive still. well, if you are in a young stage of life and home theatre is the main important thing to you, then it prob doesnt seem expensive. all relative of course :-)

Tealeaf if $2k is the set budget you'll need to make some sacrifices, because you can't fulfill all your wants with a limited budget. Sounds like you prefer size over PQ hence talk about the projector.

If that is the case than a projector over a decent $2,000 65" LED HDR screen.

Noel's have last years Sony 65" X80H LED for $1688 currently, you can get clearance 65" LED under $2k. You wont get OLED 65" under $3k though

I just stumbled across this on Noel's website - $3199 for a 65' X90J. I'm pretty sure that's a pricing error as the 55' equivalent is priced at $3,299.  Every other retailer has the 65' at around the $4k mark..
