Fathers day and I've been ok'd to upgrade my 40" 1080p Samsung which has been a great reliable TV maybe since maybe 2011? So many choices it would be great to get a recommendation from a GZ'er here.

Needs to have:

  • Great Sound
  • Prefer Connectors on LHS (when looking from front)
  • Google TV rather than Android TV (haven't used either but seems like Google TV is a better experience from what I've read)
  • Not sure about OLED HDR etc etc
  • VESA Mount Compatible
  • Optical Out (I have an Onkyo Sound bar that I could use if needed)

I have an Apple TV HD, but think a TV with built-in Chromecast/Apple TV would also be useful.

I guess I like the style of the Sony's and Samsung's (think bezel etc) but am open to anything else.

You would probably be in the market for something like the Sony X85J 50". Ticks most of your boxes. You will be using it for gaming as well or just TV/Streaming? For your Budget OLED would be out of the question.

Sony 77" A80J OLED, Integra 60.7, Panasonic UB820, Toshiba HD-XE1, Apple TV 4K, JBL L100T,JBL 18Ti, JBL L20T, Velodyne HGS15

@ARIKIP nailed it in one, the 50" Sony X85J is your best choice at that price point and covers all your criteria. Even has HDMI 2.1 features as a bonus.

+1 for the Sony. If I had a TV budget, I'd be onto a X90J 65".

Hey yeah, the X85J looks perfect. I'm not into gaming but do watch a lot of golf and tennis so assume the 200hz HDR thing will be pretty good for ball sports?

What are the standout differences between the X85J and X90J?

Ignore the 200hz advertised refresh rate; it's just marketing guff. That panel is 120hz native, so sports will look great on it.

Hopefully soon we might even see more sports filmed in high frame rate (> 60hz) to make use of it.

What are everyone's thoughts on this instead of the Sony? Samsung 50" Q60A QLED 4K Smart TV $1699

Seems like some retailers not stocking Sony anymore.

I would personally give it a hard pass, it would have to be quite a bit cheaper than the X85j to be worth it

JB Hifi has the 50" x85j for $1595 plus free delivery

Thanks for your advice Guys. Went with the X85J and it's a cracker of a TV. Picture quality is next level compared to my 1080p Samsung - even my SO is on board with the purchase!

Has anyone had any luck with pairing Bluetooth headphones to one of these? Sony lists a lot of their own headphone as being compatible but I haven't had any luck with a pair of Promate BT v5 A2DP from CDL.

Wondering if that's because the remote uses Bluetooth (i assume for voice commands) and it only supports one Bluetooth sound device at a time?
