I finally killed by Wharfedale sub. Just switched off, half way through Rammstein, Du Hast, accompanied by a rather nasty smell of overheated electronic components! Switched back on it gives the usual slight hum, but the power light doesn't come on, and it makes no sound. Where can it be repaired, or is it dead? I live in Dunedin. Thanks for any advice.

LOL. Yes, I guess that would have been less hard on the sub. For a start, I would have played it less loud because it would be too embarrassing if the neighbours heard it!

Take the sub into someone with good soldering skills (like an Auto Electrician) along with a circuit diagram if possible (to save time).

Imho identifying the fried component is relatively easy, desoldering & resoldering is the hard part.

Did this twice, first with a Pioneer VSX amp, again when my car's LCD Screen died after a jump start (5V transistor worth $4).

Don't be ashamed. With something as epic as Rammstein you need to balance it out with the polar opposites such as trance, clean rock, Taylor and some epic instrumental in order to keep your speaker systems running great and that is what everyone, including your neighbours all know. Right now they'll be hearing the lack of bass from your music and muttering "amateur, should have included Taylor".

Case in point - my last 90 days:

You'll learn the art of listening to Rammstein eventually young one. My speakers still sound great! The proof is here!

Whenever someone mentions Rammstein the Amerika video starts playing in my head, and all I hear is:

Nach Afrika kommt Santa Klaus,......Und vor Paris steht Mickey Maus ,.....Coca-Cola, Wonderbra

Over & over. :)

@michaelmurfy: Slightly OT but I notice AVB in there.....saw him at Vector (Godskitchen), 2004 I think?

And where would Progressive be without these guys..... :)

I mean....if you're gonna kill the sub, that's 100% the way to do it.

A German bloke I know started twitching uncontrollably when confronted with Rammstein in Yiddish. Close enough to be reasonably understandable, but somehow... wrong.

Du Hast and Closer, by NIN are my two go-to's when testing speakers at a store...usually as loud as I can get away with.

In saying that, Engel is also a good one for testing the boundaries of a sound system, as it has those piercing highs of the whistling and the booming lows of the bassline.

I miss going to stores.

Closer in a store is likely to get you arrested.

Thanks for all the feedback, both musical and technical. I agree that if you are going to kill the bass, Rammstein is a great way to do it. BTW, I do listen to a wide range; just before that symphonic metal and a cappella!  I will take the sub apart today and have a look. Might be an obviously fried component that I can replace. I have some skills in electronics and soldering.
