Does anyone have a DMA2200 in their setup?  If so, I'd be interested in comments on it's performance etc.

Also, what sort of menu system does it provide you?  I can't seem to find much about this at all on the web.

Is the DVD player a universal player?  Or is it locked to a particular region?

All comments would be appreciated.

I don't have the DMA2200, but I have the DMA2100 and copy the DVDs on to a hard drive accessible to the Media Centre PC. You can then playback DVDs on the extender without the need for the DVD drive. Generally this works well, but obviously there is additional work to do to get this working.

Is the 2100 identical to the 2200 without DVD player then?  What is the user interface like?

Yes, so consequently it is smaller. The user interface is the same as you see on the Media Centre PC, with a few less options (e.g. within setup etc). There is an extender menu that is specifically for configuring the extender: video, audio, network connection etc.

Download the user manual from the linksys.co.nz (support pages) to get a better idea of what the menus look like.

When you power on the 2200, you get two choices, to use the inbuilt DVD player, or to go to the Media Extender interface. There is no integration from within the extender interface itself. The DVD player interface has a basic set of controls (nothing fancy) and it will also upscale DVD content to 1080. Be aware that it is physically not what you are used to seeing in DVD players, in that it is deeper than it is wide. Mine only just fits on the shelf of the cabinet.

Have a look at the Linksys web site, which has got a reasonable amount of info http://www-nz.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=NZ%2FLayout&cid=1175239342488&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=4248821072B02

There's also quite a reasonable review over at the wegotserved site http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/2008/09/14/hands-on-review-linksys-dma-2200-extender-for-windows-media-center/

To be honest I bought my XBox 360 soley to act as an extender and have not looked back.

It works well for me and I also use it to view content I store on my WHS

i really like the idea of the HP mediasmart TVs:

http://gizmodo.com/380824/hp-mediasmart-sl4278n-and-sl4778n-get-media-extender-update

embedded extender technology in the tv makes a lot of sense to me!

i dont know if they are available outside the US though

Increasing the range of extender products has been on the books for a while and in my view a slow train to start to roll.

The TV is great but like you I'm not sure we would see it in NZ any time soon.
