I've stuck this under Home Theatre as, although my issue is with a PS3 as source, I've read about this affecting other sources and seems specific to the TVs.

Last night, I realised I didn't have my PS3 setup correctly to output full HD to my 32" Samsung Series-6 LCD TV. I changed the settings in my PS3, but when I saved the updated settings, the TV looked for the signal then displayed "Mode Not Supported". I played around with the settings more, and it seems the best I can do is 1080i.

I've done some digging on the interweb, and have found similar stories but no resolution (even by Samsung themselves) e.g. CNET thread. Has anyone else encountered this issue and managed to get it working?

The HDMI cable I'm using is the MadCatz HDMI Cable for PS3. It's obviously not a high-end cable, and some people online attribute this issue to cheaper cables, but others have the same issue on expensive cables too.

My PS3 is running the most recent firmware update and my TV is on firmware 2008/09/09_001006.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I'm pretty sure I've played Blu-Ray movies before through the PS3, and it switched fine to 1080p.

Got anything else there that can put out a 1080p signal?? PC via DVi or something.

I run my Series 6 in 1080p off HDMI from my PVR. I've occasionally seen the mode not supported, but figure its the vid card getting hot. A reboot sorts it, and then it was quite happy to play IronMan off bluray thoguth the PC on Saturday night.

I did see some notes about an updated firmware. On the Samsung site there is a 1012 version (I run the 1008) not sure what yours in, you can check it under the System update on the setup part of the menu (bottom option).

this is a known flaw with the samsung tvs (both plasma and LCD) ...

googling will bring up numerous posts and complaints about "mode not supported" annoyances.

the only other suggestions would be - try other hdmi ports on tv, maybe even returning the beauty. have you tried calling samsung?

Just a note you may already be aware of, but if you hold down the on/off button for 5 seconds when you turn on the PS3 it will reset to defaults and should find the highest available resolution that the TV supports. You def want 1080P and at 24 fps for bluray otherwise you'll get all sorts of shuddering on panning shots etc.

I'm going to borrow a Blu-Ray movie off one of the guys at work to check that as I'm sure that's worked before (though that was before we got MySky HDi). I'll also switch some plugs around and have another go. If that still fails, I'll be ringing Samsung.

Yep, did that one... the PS3 defaulted to 1080p to begin with (which the TV rejected) and I had to downstep.

UPDATE...

Updated the TV firmware to 1012, tried all HDMI sockets... no difference. Borrowed a Blu-Ray movie and it switched seamlessly to 1080p (at 24Hz) automatically. Stopped the movie - it returned to 1080i (at 60Hz) and went back to the issue. Tried my 1080p game to see if it would switch automatically and it played at 1080i.

Rang Samsung and they've "never heard of this issue so can't be that common". They advised I try my PS3 and cable with another full HD TV to eliminate them as the cause. Fair enough, that's my next step.

Two things amuse me out of this: Samsung apparently use Xbox's for testing, even though the TV has Sony components. Also, there's a lot of focus on the cable... to my mind, it's a digital cable (ie it's either working or not).

lots and lots (well i guess less than 1% but still rather significant you'd think) of complaints.

btw i have one of them and it doesnt let me do 1080p over vga but fingers crossed all other hdmi will be ok. my ps3 is doing ok with 1080p over hdmi thankfully.

I can do 1080p 24/50/60 fine with my series 6, but I use a Panasonic BD35, HTPC or video generator
An Xbox ran fine but I haven't got a PS3 to test.

It could be a ict flag issue.
Try different HDMI plugs and a different cable to iliminate those aswell.

An HDMI cable is an HDMI cable (for most purposes), if it works at all then it should be fine.

My 40" Samsung 550 displays 1080p from my PS3 with my $15 TradeMe HDMI cable just fine.

Maybe try turning the other display features off in the PS3 menu?

I've got the 1013 firmware from the Australian site, no idea if there's any difference to the 1012 firmware on the NZ site or not, but it worked fine with the 1007 firmware it had initially anyway.

One of the HDMI inputs on the 550 is regarded as a "HDMI/DVI" input whereas the other is just "HDMI", regardless I've fed 1080p signals into both of them just fine.

Update:I've managed to try my PS3 and cable in another HDTV (Samsung Series-9) where it worked at 1080p before distorting and the signal dropping. I got lent a Monster cable, connected up my TV and PS3, and it worked immediately.

So it would seem that it really is the cable (unless there's some comedy of design flaws between the TV, Mad Catz cable, and PS3). Logic dictates to me that the cable itself has some flaw in it, but the bugger is that the cable had no manufacturer markings on it to prove who made it and I can't remember where I bought it from. The bit that still doesn't make sense is that the cable will allow a 1080p signal from a Blu-Ray movie running on the PS3, but won't allow the PS3 O/S or a game signal in 1080p.

Just to disprove that it's not the expensiveness of the Monster cable making it work, I'm going to try the HDMI cable supplied with my MySky box. If that works, then I'll swap it with my Mad Catz one. If not, then I'm a bit stuffed.

Final Update: Seems I have it all working now. I tried the cheap HDMI cable that was supplied with MySky and that worked fine. So now, I have the cheap MySky cable running between the TV and PS3, and the Mad Catz cable running between the MySky box and TV. I used the Mad Catz for that as it doesn't seem to want to exceed 1080i and MySky outputs in 1080i, so it's a perfect match.

In the end, it appears that there is some fault with the Mad Catz cable, even though I thought it being a digital cable meant it either worked or it didn't (guess I was wrong). My only nagging question about this whole thing is why the cable would allow a 1080p signal through when playing a Blu-Ray movie, but no other time. Guess I may never know.
