Well I can confirm that the Sky card will expire after being out of the box for a while. I think it's been close to 2 months but definitely more than 1 month.

After ringing the call center and confusing the poor girl over why it wasn't working her team leader "did something" and we were back in action. I guess I better power up the box every month so that I don't make a habit of ringing them.

Sky send out EMM updates to the card/stb. These are the encryption keys required to decode the picture.

Quite a few PC based CAM solutions don't handle these EMM updates properly so the card needs to be reqularly put back in the STB to ensure these updates occur.

stick the card back in your box for a few hours or overnight, it'll liven itself up.

This has happened to me twice now. The first time it happened, I called Sky and they did something while I was on the phone. The second time it happened, while I was talking to Sky CS, the card seemed to reactivate itself after about 5 mins in the STB. So next time it happens, just try putting your card back in the STB and waiting a few mins. That might fix it up.

Of course if you can remember to regularly put it back in the STB overnight every month or so then this is a better solution again. I just never get around to it until it is too late!

I was hoping that NewCS was doing EMM updates as it's configured to but maybe not. I'm not overly surprised that it happened but would have been nice if NewCS had done it's job.

Any word on Windows software that does handle the EMM properly for Sky cards?

NewCS doesn't handle the TelstraClear IRDETO EMM updates either.

Cards barf and need to be reinsterted back in the box to update.

well it definitely doesn't barf with NDS but if that is what's happened then it didn't work either. Must check over the log and see if any EMM processes ran even.

There are quite a few people doing this.. There is a thread earlier in this forum that is around about 30 pages long and gives a lot of detail about what will and won't work.

"Changing channel using ndscam and dvbviewer"
"Sky on a HTPC (legally) without an STB"
And pretty much any other thread involving ndscam/newcs.

My frikken card disabled itself again tonight. A call to Sky reactivated it.

I've now put a monthly reminder in my phone to place it back in the STB overnight....
