It's for ripping you own home movies or DVDs that aren't copy protected Money mouth

Correct. The New Zealand Copyright law allwos for format shiftting audio CDs, but not DVDs. As CYaBro says this is for your own movies and non-copyright protected DVDs.

So.... is the best way to iso the disc or just rip the raw files (like a file copy) to a folder?

Actually wonder if w7 will even read iso files

No, Windows 7 Media Center won't read ISO files.

7MC movie library recognizes the directory structure of a DVD - so the correct way is to have the raw files in a "Movie Name > VIDEO_TS > *.VOB" structure.

You'll also need to put a dvdid.xml file in the same dir that contains the video_ts dir so media center can go out and get the cover art etc. THe dvdid will have the contents like

70464E8C|56B47572

to get the id, you can look it up from dvdxml.com

A quick search found this link http://paraesthesia.com/archive/2008/09/12/how-to-set-up-a-dvd-library-in-windows-media.aspx that might be a good read. It has a sample dvdid.xml file in it.

Cheers

In W7 the dvdid.xml file can just be called dvdid.xml (doesnt need anything in front in the filename).
Also the dvdid xml doesnt need the Name element in the file (just the ID element)

While slightly OT, I would advise against using the inbuilt library and use mediabrowser as it is 23562362356 x betterer. Probably the best HTPC app I've seen yet
