My Sony 46' W4500 LCD TV had a red line problem, that could not be fixed, the shop has offer me the 46' W5500 LCD TV as a replacement for free, but after I check the specification between the two, 10 bit vs 8 bit panel, Live colour creation differences, and the looks of the TV set etc, I have decided to switch to the Panasonic 50' PZ850 plasma TV at no extra cost ! Very Happy.
However, I am trying to find out the power consumption of the PZ850 plasma TV, on the Panasonic new zealand website, the figure quoted is 550W. But on another website it is much lower.

Which is right ? Or is there a way that I could measure the power consumption of the TV set itself ?

Ive got one of these they are quite good for stuff like that and can tell you watts, amps and how much you have used to date in KWh, they are pretty cheep too considering

I'd be more inclined to use the NZ website figures (Or measure yourself, using a device like the poster above) - remember that NZ is 230VAC - US is 110VAC ... I'm picking that either there is a universal powersupply (most likely now days) or they package different power packs for different regions. (I've not engaged my brain enough this afternoon to properly consider the conversions at hands ... I'll leave that up to the reader to consider ;-))

Plasma doesn't use a fixed amount of power. It depends on the picture being displayed and will constantly vary. That said modern plasma aren't hugely different in power consumption to LCDs.

I can't recall - is the quoted wattage figure the maximum that the power supply will draw?

No offence, but may I ask, why would you want to know. Unless you are on alternative power supply and are off the national grid, a 50 inch TV is going to use some juice, but if you've spent $3-4k on a TV does price / power consumption really matter. Just enquiring thanks.

Thank you for all the advice. It all started at the shop where the saleperson said something like current plasma TV uses more or less the same amount of power as LCD, I am just curious to find out the answer.
