For some crazy reason I thought windows 7 was giving fast forward / review abilities to divx/xvid avis.  But I'm just not seeing it.  Is it just my setup or.... ?

After install with no codecs installed (except for the native) I was getting slow ffwding, just a bit faster than watching in normal time.  I have since installed shark007's W7 codec pack, without tweaking any other settings (the pack still uses W7 codecs by default).  Now the button does not even fast forward.

I've done the registry hack to change my skip times to 2:30, but I had such dreams of no more silly skipping.....

what remote control are you using?  The skip buttons dont work with my setup unless i change the irtrans app configuration (see this post).  See if you can skip forward and back using CTRL-F and CTRL-B on the keyboard.

I can skip forward and back on AVI, MKV, MTS, WTV, MPG etc but the fast-forward has mixed results..

Hi Regs, Skip is okay, no worries there even after the codec pack, no hack req'd.

Using a harmony remote (One), emulating a standard MS media center remote. Asus M2A-VM HDMI board, onboard graphics with an AMD 4400+. Only thing odd with my setup is my video drivers are a bit old/unsupported, as I find i can't set the right resolutions (720p/1080i) over component video with the provided or early 2009 ati drivers. Bit of a mess really, ruined my install experience. So thats another fault possibility....

Good to know the ffwd results are variable for someone else for non-recorded content :) , ta . WTV is 100% good in that regard for me, AVI/MKV not so.

Forgot that I installed the vista virtual IR blaster driver to get past an issue to setting up sky. Something to do with hauppauge receiver only having two outputs for IR blasters but only one blaster. Bet that is what caused my Ffwd to move from slow to none in avis, not the codec pack. Not that slow was any use anyways!
