Haven't seen a topic on this for while....or if there has been one I missed it. Last I saw was http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=84&topicid=30368&page_no=2
Anyway, FYI I need an HDD for my HTPC.....I crack me up.
What I'm after from this thread is some opinions on whether the old info still holds true: silentpc and previous threads seem to hold the WD greens as the holy grail of quiet. However silentpc info seems to be getting old and doesn't stay up to date: eg they're debating the virtues of Seagate 5400.2 vs 5400.3, but I think there's a 5400.6 now. Also, all the discussions slate the WD performance because they're 5400, and yet the greens I see listed now are 7200. So are they still quietest?
Just to throw another slant into the mix - I don't really need that much space. This drive will do OS plus recorded TV, which I don't tend to keep after I've watched. So unless I never get around to watching what I record I'm thinking a couple hundred GB is fine (Win7 seems to go around 6GB per hour).
So am I better to go for a 2.5" drive if I value quiet over space? Don't really care about performance overly as long as it can handle recording a couple of channels at once.
Go for it.....
