My last foray into TV tuner cards about 7 years ago was a complicated mess which soaked up many hours. A quick scan of this forum topic looked like this could have been just as tricky.

Thankfully, it appears technology has become significantly easier to use :)

How to install NOVA-S-Plus in Windows 7100 64-bit, then stream it to an MC extender (Xbox 360).

  1. Install card into PCI slot.

  2. Turn on computer and Windows 7 automatically installs all the drivers for you. I had one that had a yellow warning in Device Manager, but when i attempted to 'Update Driver' it said it was all swell so i left it.

  3. Fire up 7MC.

  4. Select Live TV.

  5. Settings: Region: New Zealand, Satellite: Optus D1 (NZ), "Custom Single Oscillator", "10750". That's it.

  6. My signal then was maximum, so i just clicked through to finish. It said it might take a few minutes, but took about 2 seconds on my computer. If no signal, try "11300" instead, apparently.

  7. Turn on Xbox, load MC and enjoy :)

All in all took about 5 minutes, and has breathed new life into Freeview. The interface looks incredible, the EPG is an order of magnitude better than the one in my DSE decoded box. The ability to pause, series record, and keep track of what i need to watch will be invaluable. Wish i'd done it earlier!

Thanks for the guide. Can you watch one channel and record another, say record TV2 and watch TV3?

To watch one channel, and record another, you require two tv tuners cards.

Or a card with two tuners on it

I thought we were talking satellite tuners... I'm not aware of any tuners in nz which offer two satellite tuners in the same card.

What WOULD be useful though, is the ability to fake multiple tuners by dedicating one physical tuner per mux. NZers would require just 2 tuners (or is it now 3 that we have prime?) to capture all freeview channels!

They do exist (PCTV 4000i, for eg), but don't seem to be as common as hybrid dual tuners. Probably easiest to get them from online retailers.

Yeah yeah. I have two nova-s cards. Just wondering if it is worth my while changing from mediaportal to W7 MCE - debating the possible limitations of MCE (my query) with the trade off with faster response time vs mediaportal. The mediaportal lag kills me sometimes, and I'm getting unusual feedback on a couple of channels and poor deinterlacing.

I'm not sure what Mediaportal can do. I was extremely disappointed to find that you can not use a computer as a media centre extender with 7MC. So the Xbox streams live tv perfectly well, but any other computer can not :@
