Dell has introduced a small form factor desktop computer today, the Dell Inspiron Zino HD starting at US$229 in the U.S.

I was thinking of replacing my Apple Mac Mini Media Center (running Windows 7 Media Center via Bootcamp) with a new model mainly because of TV3 HD pushing the envelope on the old model... It seems we now have a small form factor PC to stop paying the "Apple tax".

Damn, just spent about $1300 on a HTPC too. Wonder how much these will retail for in NZ.

Looks awesome. Although only 2.1 audio - should have 5.1 for DVDs obviously.

Edit: removed comment about bluray drive

Apparently the other Video card HD4330 has 7.1 over HDMI, but both have no digital optical.

This can always be overcome with a USB 5.1/7.1 sound card with optical digital out though?

Yeah i think for $75US you can add in the 4330 which theoretically supports 5.1/7.1 over HDMI

Not sure about digital optical/coax outputs though :( it looks like it has none. That could be overcome with a USB soundcard I guess, but that adds to the cost

What about some of the ION Atom based systems - like the Acer Revo (advertised at JB HiFi).

And there are a few others starting to come out now that a bluRay decoding capable.

The Revo is alright, but still quite expensive, especially here :( $998 at JB, $820 at Ascent but no stock left. Plus they are selling round the $399-450USD mark when this is $229 starting :S hopefully we don't get taxed too badly when it arrives here

Still that's less that a Mac Mini isn't it and higher spec'd video hardware...

The Acer AspireRevo is actually only $US200 in the states.  Was going to go into a Best Buy and buy one while I was there, but never quite got around to it.

Yeah that's for the lowest specced one, the JBhifi one is the 4gb high spec, not sure if NZ will get anymore in for a bit, maybe they'll take off soon

Be good to have a bit more competition in the market for small Atom and AMD EE+ based PCs

I was going to order a Zino HD until I realised the shipping charge (within the US) was going to be (US)$35+!

Rediculous.

http://blogs.amd.com/home/2009/11/12/the-dell-inspiron-zinohd/

has a pretty good mini review of the unit.

In the comments section it has been confirmed that the zino hd does 5.1 channel audio via HDMI to a receiver.

looks good !
