Thinking about buying a HDMI cat5 balin set so I can watch stuff recorded on my Freeview PVR on the TV in the bedroom. Not sure whether these things also allow the Freeview PVR to be controlled remotely or not, or will I need to buy some sort of wireless RF remote device.

I see Jaycar have one extender that is around $160 and another that is around $260 and that maybe the $260 one does act as a remote control device, but the cheaper one doesnt?

Also is there a cheaper place to buy - I see people mention ebay and also cablemax? in NZ

There are none that I'm aware of that do IR as well, certainly the Jaycar ones don't.

There are adapters to do IR over cat5e cable though.

If you are running 2 cat5 cables for your hdmi balun, why don't you pull a third through as well and connect an IR receiver/sender that way (no messy R$F to get interfered with).

Yes that could be an option. Still not quite sure what these ir receiver senders that utilise cat5 look like.

I see Jaycar does a composite cat5 extender that seems to include an ir receiver/sender function -does that sound right -it might be all I need just to watch the odd thing we have recorded on the PVR.

This Jaycar one does have iR controll as well as HDMI over 2xCat5e/Cat6 cables.

It doesn't say if it comes with the iR receiver and blaster though so would pay to check with them.
