Hi,

Lately I have been looking at media players to connect to the TV at home, and also NAS for the network. Now I know there are some devices that do both, so I was wondering what people would suggest?

It will need to take a SATA drive, as I have a 1TB drive to use. Prefferably have USB support for extra drives/sticks. Also HDMI would be nice for the future, but at the moment I don't have anything that uses it, so not essential. Recording and playback via RCA input/output is a must.

As for the NAS side of it, I'm fine with a wired connection as opposed to wireless, and prefferably supports obtaining a DHCP address from the router, as I will assign a static IP. I also need to be able to access it from any computer using a password, not like some of those nasty NAS units that need you to install client software before you can use it. It also needs to accept any type of file, not just media as I will use it for backups amongst other things.

I don't have much money to spend on it, so cheaper is better, but if I find something I really like, I can save up for it.

I haven't got one but the Qnap NMP-1000 has what you're looking for. If it catered for two disks instead of just the one, I'd buy one in an instant. As it is, I'm looking at the Qnap TS-219P and an Apacer AL460 (subject to approval from the finance manager!).

I'd be interested to know if there is a unti that supports two disks for NAS and has the media player as well.

The Qnap device looks very nice. Why don't you add more space via USB?

As much as I like the Qnap, it's is far more than I was expecting to spend, however it is still an option! (just may take some time to save!!!)

It's not the extra space I need. I want the security of a NAS with RAID capability.

Ahhh yup RAID makes sense. I'm thinking of getting just an NAS and using my laptop to show movies, as it has HDMI. Girlfriend wants to buy a new TV so we'll get one with HDMI and all that jazz.

Ordered a Welland ME-747ANS from www.pconlineshop.co.nz

Normally had pretty good service from them, but it took over 10 days to arrive, and when I opened the package, they had given some cheap piece of c**p instead of what I ordered.

Have emailed them saying that they are to replace the item at their cost, or to pay for shipping and the purchase price and I will send it back to them.

Not sure if I will deal with them again, will see what they do.

Have a look at the xtreamer for a media player, and the etrayz for a nas (both made by Mivx)..
edit: just read that you need to record via the media player, the xtreamer wont do that.

The Netgear ReadyNAS pretty much does all that you're looking for. Comes in a version with 2 x 1TB drives for data protection, shame that it doesn't do 3+ drives so that could get some of the benefit of RAID 5. Its not cheap but JB Hifi seem to have it cheaper than most.

EDIT:  Actually it was the Netgear Stora that I was thinking of though, JB have it for $369 with 1 x 1TB disk and room for another to be slotted in.

Best regards,
Aaron Davidson.
