I was looking through the DSE website and noticed there was a KONKA 42" FULL HD LCD TV
for $888.

This is quite a bit cheaper than Sony's and Samsung's TV's, how does KONKA compare to them?

I would guess poorly. You get what you pay for. Is it good value for money? I'm not sure.

the picture WILL be inferior. the lifespan is PROBABLY inferior. but you're the man! calculate the costs of possibly needing to replace the tv as soon as the warranty runs out, and if you're happy with the picture quality, it's your eyes that determine that. i wouldn;t go near that thing - been stung too many times by inferior products.

Konka is one of the biggest TV brands in China. I'm sure they can't be complete and utter rubbish!

None of them have Freeview tuners so unless you already have a STB you need to factor the cost of one of these vs a TV with an integrated tuner.

A 42inch LCD for $888, you can't go wrong!

Brand, smand i say.... it's a full def LCD screen.... 5ms repsonse time, i say GO FOR IT!!

When i purchased my 40 inch Sony Bravia LCD TV 4 years ago, i paid $5,000.... it's not even full HD and has an 8ms response time.

In my opinion, it's a good deal! If you want a large LCD but dont want to pay through the roof, go for it!

I'd say it'd be a good deal if you wanted to say use it outside for summer(under cover of course) or in a garage above the pool table or in a kids playroom.

Picture on the Konka's is really bad and the lifespan, well yeah....just remember though, Consumer Guarantees act against Dick Smith if anything goes wrong within the first few years :)

We have the 22" model

Picture quality isn't exactly great, and we've have had the same issue with the tuner since we got the first one (which was returned, "fixed", and then replaced.)

This seems to happen at random and is fixed by turning it to standby then on again.

It's also worth mentioning that it takes ages to change channels (waits for additional numbers, seems to have 1000 channel presets), and will only take a PC signal at 1024x768 without it either rejecting it (second one) or looking awful (first one)

So... If you're going to be running something via HDMI all the time, it'd probably be OK. But I wouldn't recommend it if you'll be using the inbuilt tuner.

THe one he is talking about for $888 doesnt have an inbuilt tuner so that isn't as issue.

I also don't think your 22inch model is full hd???

I'm pretty sure it does. A TV without a tuner is merely a monitor with a load of inputs and a different quality panel.

Plus, I doubt they'd have bothered with teletext if it was the only thing the aerial was used for.

The point I'm making is that the specs listed may not be what you actually get in terms of resolutions supported by the PC input.
And that it may not allow 16:9 input (which is a bit of a pain if you're watching stuff using the PC input)

A TV that supports Teletext, but does not have a tuner... sounds fishy to me.

I know the older 32" model was a 720p/1080i TV BUT, as Detruire pointed out, the PC input was not 720p. This was never pointed out on the DSE website, and could only be found in the manual. I remember setting them up instore, and finding out that they would not work with the VGA splitter which was throwing out a 720p video.

So I suggest you actually ask for a copy of the manual, and see what it supports. It may not be such a good deal. Yahoo answers suggests the VGA is only 1280x1024/60.

EDIT: Someone on GPforums has poined out that pre 09/2009 models may only support hdmi 1.1, therefor limiting the connectivity of some devices.

Looks good for the money, How many hdmi ports does it have. DSE website only mentions that it has hdmi, and not how many.
It has a tuner, just not HD

You don't NEED a tuner... anyone that has SKY doesn't need one anyway.

My SOny Bravia doesnt even have a tuner... not a big deal imo.

i think Simon14 might have been meaning it doesn't have a digital tuner only analogue :P or he's just had a long afternoon

Actually, konka.co.nz has less specs, since the manual isn't working for me in Chrome and i'm struggling to navigate their site
