Upon moving to a new flat last year I hooked up my rig running a Hauppauge HVR-2200, and it worked. I took this to mean that we didn't have a satellite connection - just a terrestrial aerial.

However, there's a huge satellite dish in my apartment complex. So I'm wondering - do satellite dishes + cables pick up terrestrial signals? Would plugging my 2200 into a satellite connection provide a terrestrial signal?

If the answer is yes, I'm guessing that perhaps I do have satellite. I wouldn't mind hooking up to it if only to pick up the EPG info. Can anyone recommend a card for this? I'd just be using it for the EPG.

The huge dish is probably someones for getting asian programming off asia sat and nothign to do with the reticulated feed in the apartment.

Chances are the wall socket has both VHF/UHF and a satillite feed on it so that sky works, in which case it would work for both services, but the only way to be sure is to ask the building manager.

Plugging the HVR2200 into a satellite dish won't give you any picture at all - it's a card for DVB-T only, not DVB-S.

As richms points out many places combine their satellite and terrestrial feeds so it is possible that you may be able to use a satellite service but would certainly need to buy a new TV card first to do this.
