Hello guys,


I have had my HTPC going for a while now and im about to put in a file server. it will be on a gig net work with the HTPC, file server is running server 2008 R2 and the HTPC is running windows 7


What i wish to do is store all of my movies etc on the file server, but also record TV to the server.. Is this do able?


Also has anyone figured out a way to make a the HTPC wake up to record tv?

If you use Windows Home Server on your file server instead of the full blown Windows Server then that has the option of automatically copying any recorded TV to the server.

Have a look at MediaCentre Standby Tool in regards to putting the HTPC to sleep and waking up to record.

depending on your media center software/skill level you may be able to move the recorded file after recording to the file server.  or you may be able to record directly to a file share over the network.

yes that was what i was thinking, to just make the record a share, maybe a virtual mapped drive.. ill have to look at what settings there are on the media centre but im not home atm..

i just remoted into it, and i created a network share (mapped drive) to a local drive on the pc, and it cant see it as a place to record to..

By default a shared drive/folder is read only. Caught me out a few times.

hmm. i have looked further into this, it looks like i might be able to do this via the registry. will let you know if it works.. dont know when i can get this file server home (working on it from work)

Just for your info. The Home Server plugin works a little differently in that you record to the local HDD but then a background process runs to move the recordings on to the Home server.
Might be worth considering using a similar method via a script or some such.

I did notice in looking around. buy that i take it you can point the HTPC to the file server saying thats were to find the recordings?

You can add any local or network location as a location for TV recordings. Just add it though the media library.
