hi everyone

i downloaded an episode of friends on my pc, it was in an 'avi' file type an windows wont plat it, do i need a codec or somethin im not really sure but seen the term floatin about on the net, i cant get a straight answer, anyone got any solutions

Without knowing what codec was used is hard to find. The most popular for home made movies is Divx. There's a free codec and player only available for download - no need to buy the full version (that's only if you're making your own movies).

Freitasm is right. Its probably DIVX you're needing. Any large movie worth its salt is going to be encoded with it since its supposed to provide near DVD quality in a smaller file size.(Although it depends on how you encode it.)

Or you can use Gspot to determine what sort of codec you need.

try using mplayer to play your movies, its free and is better than Windows Media Player if you ask me. I've never had to download codecs and I play quicktime, realmedia, xvid, divx and more

btw avoid downloading DivX from divx.com last time I did it installed Gator (evil adware)

Or use VLC (VideoLan). It is also free and plays pretty much anything (including DiVX) without the nasty spyware muck.

I would also recommend vlc player. It plays almost anything you throw at it.

your all making this rather complicated.

I take it you used a bittorrent client to get the .avi file? if you do a search on torrentspy.com for k-lite codec pack and download the file and run it, it will install every codec you will ever need and you can use windows media to watch and listen to anything. no need for multiple media players.
