Hi - There is no line-out socket on this tv tuner card so how does sound get routed to my soundcard/speakers? The picture is fine, just no sound. Windows XP SP3, Cyberlink Power Cinema.

It doesn't need a line out.

The audio is part of the MPEG Transport Stream, this is passed thru from the card to the PC which does the decoding of the audio and video with an appropiate codec.

From memory Power Cinema never did include support for the AAC audio used in NZ, you're probably better off installing better TV software such as GB-PVR, Media Portal or DVBViewer or WinTV7.

Thanks - that's interesting about the AAC codec, because the PowerCinema patch for that has been installed. Should the tv tuner card itself appear in the list of sound devices like the Vinyl AC97 then I could configure it in during installation?

No it won't appear as a sound device because there is no "audio device" as such.

As I explained above the card passes the entire MPEG Transport Stream through from the Freeview broadcast to the PC for decoding. It doesn't do any decoding of the Transport Stream, that's up to your Video and Audio codecs to do.

PowerCinema is horrible outdated software, I wouldn't bother with it. There are far better options out there.

I have installed WinTV7 as you suggested from the link provided by Hauppauge and now have sound for the radio tuner, the analogue tv tuner, but still no sound with the DVB-T tuner (great picture though). Am I a codec or patch missing? I'm wondering if it is something quirky to do with the Kiwi DVB-T rollout?

Many TV applications don't come with a H.264 codec or AAC-LATM codec installed. I believe the DVD version of WinTV included with the TV card does but the download doesn't due to the costs of licencing.

With WinTV7 you still need to install these, you need to use PowerDVD8 or PowerDVD9 that has H.264 support. You will also need to install the Monogram AAC codec for audio support.

I've downloaded a zip file that I think contains Monogram AAC codec it's called mmaacd.ax (Well out of comfort zone now...) should I install this? How and where do you install it?

Put that file somwhere on your system (try c:\windows\system32)
The run the following in a command prompt (or straight from the run box in windows.

regsvr32 "c:\windows\system32\mmaacd.ax"

Stunned - all 3 modes work (DVB-T, Analogue TV, FM Radio). The only irksome thing now is that on the analogue TV side of things I can't manually program the frequency of one of the channels I want to pick up: - WinTV7 tunes to it slightly off dead of centre giving me good sound but a black & white picture. Anyway I'm well ahead of where I was a week ago so thanks so much for all the help you've both given me. And I can still use my old WinFast PVR2000 tuner as well. As for PowerCinema - I just couldn't get that to work satisfactorily at all. Does anything beat WinTV7 in this type of software in your opinions?

As I mentioned above, (in no particular order) GB-PVR, Media Portal, DVBViewer and the built in Media Centre in Windows7 are all superior options.

Have just used the recording option, the picture records fine, just no sound recorded (DVB-T). Can anyone suggest a combination of 3rd party decoders for the Advanced Options tab? I've got MONOGRAM AAC Decoder selected for the HE-AAC Audio option and it was this brought sound to life in live TV. But what should I choose for MPEG1 Audio, AC3 Audio, and DD+/EAC3 Audio ? I've selected ffdshow Audio Decoder for all three. it didn't work and am starting to go dizzy with trying different combinations of other decoders and restarting WinTV7. For MPEG1 Audio and AC3 Audio I've got about a dozen choices to select from! Can anyone name a combination that works for them? Cheers,

As sbiddle has suggested there are other options that are far better then WinTV which is really just a through in. What OS are you using? If Windows 7 then just use media centre (you may need to uninstall WinTV first). If XP or Vista look at the other options suggested.
You will find good support for any of them.

if any users of WinTV7 that are successfully recording DVB-T on HVR-4000 could tell me their Advanced Options I might be able to record sound as well as picture ...any help appreciated. Would like to stay with WinTV7 if poss.

You are recording ther sound, you obviously just don't have the correct codec or configuration to play it back.

Sorry I can't help any further, I've never used WinTV7.

Well I've finally got WinTV7 going pretty well, but my marriage is pretty shakey as a result of the excessive hours this has taken..... so, I can even record Freeview HDTV except with some channels I am unable to playback the sound. For example TV3 I can playback the recorded video - and sound is present. Playing back TV1, no sound! Why would that be and what can I try that might overcome the problem?

Which recordings work and which don't channel-wise? I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that only TV3 works.

The reason: (AFAIK) TV3 is the only channel with AC3 audio; all other channels use HE-AAC. Well technically TV3 has dual audio streams, but that is beside the point. Whatever you're using to play your recordings probably supports AC3 but not HE-AAC.

The solution: like sbiddle said, use a player that can utilise the Monogram codec that you already installed (or alternatively a program like VLC that uses built-in codecs but that supports HE-AAC).

What are you using for recording playback? Have you got other programs installed that you could try?

BTW I'm with sbiddle on the TV app thing. There is better software out there! I'm a happy user of MediaPortal.
