Amongst a box-lot of goodies I bought at an auction are 3 mono microphones surplus to my requirements so I'm intending to sell them on Trademe. (Marantz EC-33S, EC-12B and an uknown)

I'm not in the business of ripping people off so I want to test them before I list them.  The only device I can use for this is my PC.  When doing this, none of them seem to work. I find it hard to believe they're all faulty, particulalrly since they appear in good condition in their original cases complete with all accessories.

Could the reason for them not working be because I'm plugging a mono 3.5mm plug into a stereo socket.  Is it worth investigating further ways to test them or are they simply duds?

Thanks

Can you post photos?

I'm pretty sure from a quick google search on the Marantz EC-33S that it has battery power, so check to see that the battery fitted isn't flat.

I'm guessing the EC-12B is this one: http://www.retrothing.com/2006...
Have you got the telescopic handle and box? :) This one appears to have a button cell battery also, so check it's not flat.

Might be able to work out the other one if you can post a picture?

Thanks Zolly. tried fresh batteries in the EC-33s, no difference. Will post some pics tomorrow or on the weekend. I can record a very faint sound with the EC-33s, but nothing like what I get with a proper PC headset. The third one seems to be a no-brand the sort that they would bundle with cassette recorders.

The EC-12B is complete with the telescopic handle, might be of some interest to a collector.

I think I'll solder myself a wee adapter on the weekend, just to rule out pin-ring plug vs pin-ring-ring socket incompatibility.

No prob, would be interested to see em :) The one with the telescopic handle looks quite quirky!
Clean battery contacts maybe, if the adapter you make doesn't work.. Perhaps there's just not enough juice getting through.

From that url above..

Actually, there have been a number of
these on Ebay in recent years, but they
usually suffer from the familiar problem
of wire disconnect (the solder contact
in at the bottom of the long wand has
broken)

This is repairable, but a pain in the
neck to do, however once done you can
have a great mic. I have three of them...
and they are great for doing interviews
because of the very reasons you list...

So that might explain why the one with the telescopic handle isn't working (?)

Had marginal success with the EC-33S, some plugs and some clip-leads, and managed to record with them on the PC. I really don't have the inspiration (or technical knowhow) to test them any further, too nice a day to be inside, so have listed them on TM at $1 reserve, as is. Auction no. is 270257760, photo there too.

Thanks for your help Zolly.
