Hey guys iv got a core2duo 1.86ghz pc and looking at putting a low profile graphics card for playing bluray movies etc up to 1080p.

What would be a good choice? Im thinking of running xbmc live but might upgrade to windows 7 later and use it for TV also.

Any suggestions would be appreciated guys. Thanks

I looked into the new GT range , the reviews I read said not good for gaming but for HTPC they were fine.
XBMC supports BluRay ?

i just had a look and realised that it cant play bluray straight from disk.

are there any ATI cards in low profile that would do a better job in windows? or would nvidia be good enough?

The new 5450 from ATI would be a very good purchase if you don't want an nVidia card

I agree with PANiCnz with one piece of advice - you should be aware that the 5450 doesn't quite handle the best deinterlacing mode all the time. This could affect picture quality for interlaced content such as TV3. See the review at Anandtech for more details... http://www.anandtech.com/video.... Also as Anandtech say, other cards lower than a 4670 (what I got thank goodness!) from the previous generation will have a similar problem (and they don't have bitstreaming support).

I had an nVidia 9600GT low-profile card and it worked fine for HDTV and movies. I've migrated to a 220GT now and it's also fine. The reason for the upgrade was that the 220GT had a larger, quieter fan than the 9600; otherwise the performance in HTPC-type apps is exactly the same.

yea i'll be interested to know if it was also low profile. i have heard that the noise from the GT220 fan is loud especially the asus low profile one.

A Gigabyte one. It's not low-profile and it's dual-slot, so probably not what you're after unfortunately.

I'm just saying that as a chip, the GT220 does the job for HTPC apps. Finding a quiet, low-profile graphics card seems to be a lost cause right now.

Galaxy and Palit look like they are doing single slot GT220's. Question is how quite are they with fans?

Another option is a fanless aftermarket cooler, my Zalman ZNF100 wraps around my video card so it is mounted above the card and right next to my CPU heatsink. VGA card is cooler than it was with the standard heatsink and fan.

I wish NVIDIA would produce a chip focused on video decoding and silence (low heat). I'd like a low profile card that can decode HD video with no fan at all. I could care less whether it could play world of battle craft or whatever at 5000fps!

My otherwise crap nvidia quaddro FX550 works in 7 media center just fine on all channels, and also played a blueray rip sweet as with only about 10% CPU - Im not sure what gforce it has teh same core as, but it certainly is crap at 3d.
