One of the the things that puts me of a HTPC playing freeview is not having an EPG. Although I could manualy program a recording from the TV Guide listings, I wondered if there was a decent hack or workaround that can be recommended. Can you program recordings from the EPG? If you can't, even on Freeview approved machines then there doesn't seem much gained in having a EPG in the first place.

What media center software? and what source? If DVB-S you do not need a hack for most software. For DVB-T yes there are apps or hacks to get EPG for any of the media center software but they need a internet connection to work.

What are the best settings for BSEPG?
Or is there a noob guide to what all the settings mean in BSEPG?
I've read the user guide but it doesn't actually do into much details as to what each setting does on the screen that lists all the channels.

For Windows 7 HD EPG you could try here: http://xmltv2mxf.googlecode.com and download the program guide.rar.

I have used this program before and it works just fine. It loads a standard XMLTV formatted file into W7MCE. There are at least two sources for a local XMLTV file for NZ and the rar file contains a well documented example using revens xmltv output.

Personally I do very little as far as configuration. I point it at haventech for the source. Only activate the channels that I get (Freeview and Telstra cable) I do one part differently then the suggested method. I remove the numbers from BSE which means that in MC the EPG data is listed with the channel name but no channel number. This makes them easy to recognize as being from BSE. Otherwise I found it confusing between BSE data and channels that had grabbed over the air data.
Then I match them up to the channels.

However I know Rusty does quite a bit of data manipulation before and with BSE. Depends how much info you want from it I guess.
