I have been scouring the web and various electrical/PC stores trying to find what I think is a pretty simple piece of hardware - a USB infrared receiver so that I can control Media Centre via remote.  The only ones I have been able to find come as a kit with a MCE remote and start from about $55.  I just bought a Harmony 515 and so do not require the MCE remote.  An infrared receiver is surely only a $10 bit of equipment anyhow.  No place seems to sell them as a separate item.

I found some cheap kits on Trademe, about $20 for a remote and receiver.  Has anyone tried these uncertified receivers? From what I have been able to gather, the remotes they come with are detected as keyboards and so just send shortcut key signals to the receiver.  But if I use the Harmony 515 will these receivers be able to pick up proper IR codes as the certified models do?

Another option is to purchase a new tv tuner card such as the Hauppauge 2200 (I could make use of a dual tuner card, rather than the 1200 I have at the moment) and use the receiver which comes with the MCE versions of the card.  But I think most of these receivers actually plug into the card itself and so may not work so well with a separate remote?  I think a USB version would be better in the long run anyway.

Any ideas?

I guess what I am really asking is if anyone has purchased and tried one of the various imported remote + receiver kits off Trademe:

Will these receivers work with a Harmony 515 remote?

i am using a harmony with the built in IR Receiver in my pc case (Zalman HD160).

some IR units wont work though - the original silverstone cases had a built in IR system that was not MCE remote compatible. Likewise, some of the Hauppauge cards have a non compatible remote receiver etc. To be safe, make sure it says MCE compatible remote.

Note that the first link you had was also a IR blaster - could be useful if you want to get MCE to send signals to a set top box like a sky box.

Most of those cheap "mce" ones wont work.  Ive tested a few and they just dont seem to respond to any commands other than their own remote which are normally mapped to keyboard commands.  I didnt spend alot of time trying though.

While not locally bought, I have a USB-UIRT, device made overseas (I think you can buy plans seperately and make yourself if so inclined).  It's a combination Receiver/blaster.

I currently have it running as an MCE remote, but have had it as a Hauppage remote as well.

The main disadvantage over the MCE receiver is that it cannot start your media software if for some reason it is shut down.

Ok.  Thanks for the replies so far guys.

askelon - I think you're saying that those cheaper remotes send keystroke commands which the receiver picks up.  So when you want to use a proper MCE remote (or Harmony 515 operating as one) the receiver won't pick up the signals because they are being sent as proper IR codes, not keystrokes.  Is that right?

davidcole - I don't get why you cannot start up media software using a USB-UIRT device?  Don't you have to use remote detection software like Girder or LIRC to even be able to use this device?  That being the case, I would have thought you could program a button on your remote to open certain software.  Have not delved into all this yet obviously, so am just going off brief snippets I have picked up.

Oh and I don't require IR blaster features.....although it is still early days in my HTPC setup Tongue out

The top one will, not sure on the second too

The top one looks like an HP MCE receiver.

Do you have an ebay account? you can pickup an OEM HP receiver and remote for about $25NZD delivered.  and it works with the logitech remotes, my 785 powers it nicely using Win7 64bit on my Atom HTPC

I am a bit dubious of the first Trademe listing as it said "...same as original microsoft product except no logo on the remote(OEM)".  I checked out ebay listings (way more variety than what Trademe has) and found that HP receiver.  The Trademe one does look very similar, just without the branding.

I don't have an ebay account, but the prices seem pretty reasonable, even after conversion and shipping costs.  Only real issue is the length of time I'd have to wait to get the item.  Most listings were quoted as 15-28 days shipping.  Will definitely keep this option in mind though, thanks vinnieg!

BTW, can the HP receiver you have pick up all remote button presses with the Harmony?  It wakes PC from sleep, can shut it down, start up Win 7 Media Centre etc etc?  Did you need drivers for this receiver or did Win7 auto detect it?  Do you need software running in the background to detect the IR signals?

Cheers

I could but don't.  Gbpvr supports the usb-urit right out of the box, so I guess takes all my infrared commands directly and processes them.  So in this respect the usb-urit technically has no interaction with the os.

I use the USB-UIRT all the time with gbpvr. It works fine for changing channels on my TCL box when I want to record.

But the device (or is it gbpvr) doesn't like it to be both a receiver and sender so for a while I was using the receiver from a Hauppauge PVR-250 card and Girder to control the PC. I broke that somehow with wrong DLL releases of the IR Remote code from Hauppauge and Girder so just gave up. But it did work for a while. THe USB-UIRT works just fine though.

Have either of you tried USB-UIRT with Win 7 Media Centre?  That is what I am currently using for Freeview and other media.  I don't think it has built in support for this type of device, so I would need to run additional software like Intelliremote or Eventghost to pass the IR signals onto 7MC.  Not that it is a big deal.  But I am still leaning towards a certified MCE receiver, even if I have to purchase it as a kit with a remote.  Can just on-sell the remote to Trademe.

Just as a heads up to others who may be in the market for a proper USB IR receiver (I have seen many threads on Geekzone regarding this) - I purchased an "HP IR Wireless MCE USB Infrared Receiver VISTA MCE2005" off Ebay which I have read works perfectly with the MCE remotes and hence will operate correctly with my Harmony 515.

The total cost was $20.00 NZD delivered to my door.  So it is a very good, inexpensive option if all you are wanting is the IR receiver and already have a compatible remote.  Beats paying $60-$70 for a certified MCE remote/receiver kit from computer stores in NZ.  Only downside is it will take 2-3 weeks to get here....but I can be patient for the cost saving I'm making.
