hi,

I have just put in a new motherboard and PSU into an old HP HTPC and the CD/DVD won't open so I can't install the drivers etc.
I have changed the ribbon and also the drive itself. The orginal drive didn't seem to have power going to it (no LED on) but the other drive which is only a CD drive does have power going to it but it still won't open.

All the fans start and keep running, the HDD starts and there is power going to the TV Tuner.

Nothing comes up on the screen and there are also no lights on the keboard or mouse.

Any ideas what I can do?

Remove everything from the motherboard except CPU and RAM and plug in screen and start.. anything on the screen? If this works then start plugin in other stuff and see which one is "breaking it".

If nothing on screen turn off, check ram is correct type/placed in correctly. Check CPU is correct type and maybe resocket.

I took everything out and restarted only putting the CPU and ram back in and plugged the monitor onto the onboard VGA port and still nothing.

I haven't tried another PSU but the one thats in there is a brand new one.

Also tried 2 different sticks of ram and reset the CMOS.

So I tried just plugging the DVD drive into the power without the IDE cable and now there is power going to the drive and it happily opens, minute I plug the IDE cable back in the power disappears again. As I mentioned in my first post I have tried 2 different IDE cables.
So I'm guessing the mobo is a dud and I need to take it back for a replacement.

OK, this is a really stupid question, but is the IDE cable in the correct way around? I have had occurances where that would cause HDD's to exhibit the same symptoms.
