I can not see any issues with using it, neither can I think of any way you will ever get "caught" for using it. Laws are (supposed to be) only put in place if it can be policed/enforced.

What laws would it break at this stage anyway? IIRC anti copy measures have to be effective for selling devices to get around them to be illegal.

New Zealand doesn't have any laws about circumventing anti-copy measures (in the US DMCA sense). If someone implements a copy-protection mechanism, you are quite legally entitled to bypass it using whatever mechanism you please.

There are a couple of caveats here; if the copy protected content is copyrighted, you may be breaking copyright if you're circumventing the copy protection to copy the material. This depends on the nature of the use, the rights reserved under copyright, and other factors. You're entitled to copy portions of a work to purposes of fair review, for example, or to format shift audio content. So, it's quite legal to format shift an audio recording from a CD to your ipod, even if the CD contains a copy protection mechanism.

You may also be breaking license agreements, but this would depend on what you've agreed to, for example a software EULA may require you not to try and bypass its copy protection mechanisms.

Disclaimer: IANAL

This is interesting for me too. So I presume it is also legal to copy >myyour< games to hard drive while the originals are locked up for a legitimate reason? For example having a 7 year old that loves Need 4 Speed but can't (yet) be trusted to safely changing CDs?

I know several people with HDCP removers, and they all came through Customs clearly marked as such on the courier package, with no problems. I haven't purchased one yet, but will likely do so if I upgrade to MySky. That will let be get a component distribution amp from Jaycar, and run the video around the house etc.

Personally, I suspect Sky don't actually care too much and have only implemented the scheme to keep their suppliers happy so they can get HD programming. That is long as you are only using them so that a non-HDMI TV will work with HD or recording for personal use, not causing Sky grief with suppliers by doing something naughty like uploading the recordings with a Sky watermark to the 'net.
