I have a DSE HDMI switch because my tv only has 1 hdmi input.

I had my sky hdi, dv d players and xbox 360 all running through the switch all working fine.

I have just put together a HTPC.

When turning on the HTPC with the HDMI switch to the HTPC input, everything displays on the TV.

When changing the HDMI switch to another input i.e dvd player then back to the HTPC the tv detects the HTPC sets the resolution but just shows as a snowy picture. The only way I can get the picture back up is by rebooting the HTPC.

My graphics card is an HD 5670

Also, if I change the resolution from 720 to 1080 it flickers.

Hopefully someone here can give some advice.

Probably just the vagaries of HDMI compatibility. Check to see if there's an update for your HTPC HDMI (graphics card) firmware.

Experiment with the various settings of your HTPC output if you haven't already.

Is the HTPC working OK direct to the TV?

Yeh compatibility issues. the story with hdmi switches is not as simple as the analogue a/v switches, its much more complicated. it could also be the re-handshaking that's causing the problem.

Last night I plugged the HTPC direct to the pc, unplugged it for 5 mins then plugged it back in and it detected the tv fine so it is the switch.

In regards to the flicker, I have updated the drivers to the latest and it has not resolved the issue (Even by passing the HDMI switch.

Does anyone think that using a Onkyo amp with inbuilt HDMI switch will resolve the issue?

Am looking at getting one of those if it will resolve the issue.

Yep but some amps don't support PC resolutions, so you should do your research first.

This from experience, i was helping a mate setup his onkyo txsr606 to work as a switch and i just couldnt get it to display htpc signal. by the way go for Onkyo txsr508 as its supporting hdmi 1.4 and i would look at the manual to see if PC signal is supported
http://www.eu.onkyo.com/dl/1465319/Manual_TX-SR508_TX-SR508_En.pdf

look at sections related to HDMI, sometimes its stated in tiny writing notes at the bottom.

A couple of things that may assist, although my HTPC runs an Nvidia card.  I have had setups where I have had a hdmi switch between the HTPC and the TV, and my current setup has an Onkyo 606 between.

Firstly when I was using the switch it would not handle the data rate of 1080p and kept dropping out.  Reducing to 1080i or 720p worked okay (blu-ray had same problem - so definitely the switch).

When I put the 606 into the system instead of the switch, I set it to pass through.  However the graphics card would only 'see' the 606 whose native res is only 1080i, while the TV is capable of 1080p.  So I had to lock the HTPC to an output resolution (1920x1080) rather than the 'HDTV' setting which was an option in the videocard management software.  The 606 still quite happily passed the 1080p signal to the TV.

I guess what I'm getting at is try locking a video resolution in and see if that avoids the part of the hdmi handshake where the source and display negotiate an output resolution...
