6 months after buying a dse freeview HD box, my parents finally decide 'hey let's buy a tv'.

So I was looking at getting the KONKA 42" one cos it's so cheap and it's got good reviews.. the 47" Konka comes within our price range but my mum reckons it's too big. There's none in stock at the glenfield DSE and the staff tried to sell my dad the DSE branded 42" as seen here; http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/4c3171a3024cd2d0273fc0a87f3b06ed/Product/View/GE6593

vs

http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/4c3171a3024cd2d0273fc0a87f3b06ed/Product/View/GE6497

I can't find any information about the DSE one such as who makes it and if its any good, the contrast ratio says only 2500:1 but it doesn't say dynamic so is that actually really bad compared to the 10000:1 dynamic ratio of the konka?

thanks

Suggest you look at Havey norman, Jb hifi and Noel lemming/bond and bond, see what you can get for your price range from a "known brand".
Bond and bond have upto 20% off ending tomorrow.

I reckon you should check out the 'known' brands too.

There is a Sony for around $1199 is you'd like to drop to 40", and you could ask for a better price.
Then there is Samsung and LG.  There is a cheapie 42" Plasma from LG for around $999, that will even play your MKV files etc.

You really should try your luck at getting a deal from JB/NL etc.

Ignore dynamic contrast ratios - they're all marketing hype...

You can get a Panasonic 42" plasma for under $1000 at the moment.
Get your parents to sit in front of an LG / Samsung and Panasonic to see what picture they prefer and go that way.

Hey there.

I work at dick smiths and according to an internal memo we got they are sommets, not sure if thats changed for the new ones that have just come in this week but they look pretty similar aside from the cardboard box.

I'd definitely go for the DSE over the konka even if it's just for the built in freeview, it has a slightly nicer picture in that it's blacks are at least somewhat black and the colours at least attempt to be accurate. The konka is not even worth considering in my opinion.

However I have to agree with all the other guys here, with both samsung and panasonic plasmas for the same price I wouldn't even consider the DSE or Konka. Those two plasmas have better pictures than $3000+ LCDs in a dark room.

Oh and ignore all contrast ratio numbers forever, even native ones give no real indication of how good a tv's picture is and they're usually recorded with unwatchable picture settings just to boost the number on the spec sheet. A decent review or a viewing of the tv in a nice room is a far better indication of how a tv performs.

Just a side note here...
Please be careful about disclosing information on a public forum, unless you are 100% sure it is not bound by a NDA. Also, if you are using your real name on a forum, admit you work for xyz company and then tell people not to buy their product... is not a good look if your employer finds out.
This is just a general comment I am not suggesting you have crossed a line, just make sure you do not do it.

Noted, I'm not saying anything that I wouldn't if we were in my store. I see your point though.

hmmm. so I take it all those people who reviewed the Konka highly are bonkers and don't know their stuff, or it's a gem that just needs a little polishing. >.< I always thought to ignore plasmas as they're inferior technology, 1024x768 is an ugly resolution at 16:9 isn't it?

I've seen the Konka at a DSE store and it looked rubbish, but I put that down to the crappy freeview reception in the store..

I believe you should look for a TV that suits what your parents watch.

For example, if they watch only the news and some wholesome family movies (really exaggerating here:P), then any brand of TV is fine.

If they are into sports, action films, full HD content such as blu-ray, then go for a branded TV instead.

At the moment I am temporarily using an old crappy Conia TV (built in the late 90s I think!) and it's fine for what I need.

Lol, what reviews are these? I've tried all the polishing I could find in the picture settings and I could not improve the Konka's picture enough to make it better than any of the other tvs.

How are plasmas inferior? Both technologies have their own strengths and weaknesses.

1024x768 on a 40" could be just fine, depends on how far back you sit
http://www.lowtek.ca/roo/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/resolution_chart.png
this chart has made quite a few appearances on these forums, by looking at the chart you would have to be roughly less than 2m away from a 40" tv for any resoloution higher than 1024x768 to even become a noticeable benefit.

The 1024x768 plasmas I've seen looked so bad compared with the Full HD ones that I wouldn't touch them despite what charts may say.

If they have never seen any other TV then of course they think its the best thing ever.
Spend 10 minutes and walk into another store and look at a name brand tv if you cant tell the difference then save your cash.

That will depend on a multitude of factors including...
The source material, the lighting on the separate panels, the calibration settings, the angle from which you were viewing them, the distance you were viewing them from - and of course, how tired you were at the time of viewing.

For most people who only watch TV, an HD (or HD Ready) panel is all they'll ever need.
Despite what the manufacturers blurb may stipulate.
