Hello all

Wah! The haventech epg.xml hasn't been updated since the end of June. Does anybody know if this is accidental or deliberate? As a TelstraClear cable subscriber I don't think I can use the MHEG5 collector, so I'm up the creek without a paddle for guide data right now. If you know an alternate source I'd really appreciate a PM or an email to ian at bevantech dot com (because I'm guessing people won't post an alternate source here because the bastards at Sky are undoubtedly watching).

Yip seems to have dried up. I seem to recall there were some other options out there (other then the MHEG5 collector). Might have to look into them.

Yup TV1 and TV2 listings have run out.

What to do?

I've emailed the haventech user here on geekzone in the hope they can illuminate us on what's going on.

It is probably because TVNZ have changed their schedule format. They used to host xml schedules of all the Freeview channels that practically all the XMLTV sites used as their source. Even the official Freeview site used it and their schedule is down right now :)

I can still see the raw XML files online, yes the epg on freeview's site is still down.

The haventech files are all still online - but TV1 and TV2 have run out of data (it's all old). Ties into the observations re TVNZ and Freeview.

This pushed me to try the MHEG grabber 'cause I was under wifie pressure.

Works a treat. Very simple install and setup.

I'm still annoyed Win7 isn't servicing NZ out of the box (how hard would it be, really), but at least the alternatives are now not so difficult. These alternatives are still putting an HTPC out of the reach of a non tech savvy user though (I use my mother as the measuring stick!).

This just in from haventech:

"Just a temporary issue between 1-6 July, but the file should be being updated again now."

I'll check it in detail tonight... and report back. Still looked iffy last night.

Again, the more people talk about guide data sources on here publicly, the greater chance Sky has of identifying them and putting a stop to them.

Just my advice...

Or, another way of looking it.......the more people openly discuss this, the more people wake up to this bizarre situation and put pressure on the networks to either publish a guide, or to allow others to publish.

It's bollocks.....the content is broadcast 'free to air' - they send content meta data with it to use if you can, but which Microsoft chooses not to account for.  But Sky (or whoever) decide that they don't want anyone else collating that data and reformatting it.....

....and we're not supposed to talk about it???

Out of all the guide sources that Sky has already squashed, how many people have challenged them?  None, and it's not going to happen.

It is much more worthwhile trying to preserve those that are left.  I don't agree with Sky's actions, but you have to do what you can to avoid them...

That's my point! No one provider can fight them cause they do in fact own the content (ie law is on their side).

SO the only thing that will help is public opinion.......we need martyrs!!!  Yell

So you are a copyright lawyer are you?

It's worthy of note that in Australia, where a legal challenge was mounted, EPG data had been ruled to be in the public domain.

Nope, no lawyer here. I was acting on the assumption (my mistake) that that was the grounds Sky was using to shut down providers.

You're suggesting this was done (here in NZ) with no legal basis? All the more reason to talk about it rather than treat it as some hush hush thing.....
