Vlc media player is Probably the best free one.

Fully agree, doesn't get much better and plays just about anything

I was going to suggest media player classic. A tiny app that will play most media and uses very little memory.

Looks like a retro win 3.1 media player but isn't MS

Great for older lappies and netbooks.

Personally i like Media Player Classic - Home Cinema.
Can customize your codecs, and FFDShow upscaling is excellent on the TV with SD content

We loaded vlc and its working but the playbck scree seems to stop every few seconds like its loading all the time. The audio is fine. Im wondering if there is an acceleration setting i can change, or perhaps i need more ram (currently has 512).
Any sugestions?
:-)

Hmm could be video RAM thats limiting you - if you can get into the BIOS of the laptop, check if theres an option to increase the onboard video RAM.
