A warning to those out there who are considering buying the USB WiFi dongle for this to use it as a DLNA client, I can not get mine to work with TVersity, PS3 Media Server or Windows Home Server, the only thing is will work with is Panasonic DMR XW380 (which is not much use because they chose to not support HE-AAC, although it must have the codec as it's a FreeView TV).

The "diagnostics" simply state "Failed" when attempting to connect to any of these servers.

Have you tried XBMC? I have an older Sony 32" and the common thread was that it would only work with XBMC. However, I did have luck with Windows 7 MC. It is now unplugged though as there is no ethernet to the wall it is on.

Unable to enable the UPnP on XBMC, I'll get back to you when I work out why it is not working (maybe some firewall issue)

Firewall opened and can now see the device (on Win Media Player 11) but can not see the content. The XBMC libraries are configured but not sharing the content?

My experience with Sony products is that the DLNA has been severely crippled off the bat.
TwonkyMedia Server may be a go'er... haven't tried it on a Sony - but then I wouldn't contemplate Sony for that anyway.

It's most disappointing given that PS3 supports all the DLNA servers I have tried, but the TV has supported only the Panasonic FreeView. XBMC is looking promising, the diagnostics returns "no supported media" rather than just "unsupported server" as it does for all the others. Just got to work out how to get the XBMC to actually stream the library

Sony has a bit of a mania for proprietary solutions, non-standard formats and DRM. I learnt some time ago (after considerable run around) to avoid Sony for anything where interoperatbility may be required.

If the dongle doesn't work as it reasonably should, my advice is to return it for a refund (or a to have it checked - it may just be faulty).

Twonky seems pretty good for me - I paid $28 for the Mac media server (from memory) and it works like a charm :-)

TwonkyServer v6 NZD 26.57. I'll continue to test it through the trial period and if the TV continues to see it then I'll be happy to shell out for it.

Some notes on the other servers I tried.

PS3 Media Server can be installed as a service, but that service can not be uninstalled
XBMC can not be installed as a service
Twonky has a very useful web interface, making it more device friendly, i.e. players that don't have DLNA client inbuilt can be triggered from the Twonky webpage

The TV itself automatically filters content on the server and does not display unsupported formats.

Another note on PS3 Media Server, it requires Java, which the recent update had a problem with Windows Home Server. I'm reinstalling WHS with the included DLNA/UPnP service and Twonky.

I've replaced my WiFi router (3rd time lucky) and now my TV is behaving as the device I always hoped it would. I went from a 3 Com to a pricey Netgear (DGND3700) and now replaced with a cheap (<$100) TP-Link and now it works. I can connect to my Panasonic and WHS 2011 servers consistently. The PS3 seems much more fault tollerant that the TV, but with the TP-Link (TD-W8960N) the TV is finally behaving.
