Heya. I had an old Sony 29" for about 10 years and have no shifted a LG LCD 32" in its place. I need to connect the VCR up to it so I can record (Using VHS). Ive managed to get it to play tapes, but I cant record channels.

When I change the Input mode on the TV to AV1 theres just a white screen, I press play and the tape will play. However when I go to record something its just a white screen. Ive tried putting the TV on HDMI and just normal TV mode but it wont record.

I do also have a Freeview box so that might have something to do with it.

All help greatly apprecaited. Ill do my best to answer your questions.

Thanks :)

Tell us in detail how VCR, Freeview box and TV is cabled together, including RF cabling.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

You have nothing going from the freeview box to the VCR, so it will have nothing to record from.

You will need to use another RCA cable from the analog outputs of the box to the AV in of your VCR. Dollar stores etc have them at a price that cant be beat.

you will need a scart to RCA cable to input to the VCR which I am assuming is a dvd player too. If you know someone with an old xbox they will have got one free with it which they will have sitting around unused. One of the scart sockets may not input.

You may be able to input svideo instead, but that would mean buying an adapter from DSE or similar at their insane prices - something like P6674 - but really, that price is about 20 times what it should be so look around elsewhere for one - make sure you get one with a switch since otherwise it will be one direction only, and chances are with the confusing naming they give them you will get the wrong one.

I will have a look in the shed later and see if I have a scart to svideo adapter still. The tv I had with scart went out last inorganic collection so I may have biffed it, but I may still have one. I have an xbox one anyway.

I don't know about that, by the looks of the photo, those are all outputs (Lines 1 and 3 out are Scart, Line 2 is Composite).  There should be a line In on the VCR somewhere as well (maybe on the front?), which you just plug RCA cable from the yellow, white and red on the Freeview Box into (you can use your green, blue and red cable - just be consistent with colours, I pretend Green is Yellow, Blue is White and Red is...)

Does your new TV have freeview built in?

You are also aware that to record freeview, that you need to set the channel on the freeview box, and set the VCR to record the LineIn?

it wouldnt be called line something if it was just an output, the line 2 input will be on the front. Why would you want cables going in the front of something all the time?

Well I just tried using my Red/Green/Blue Cables. I matched them up with Line 2 In (Which yes is on the front of my VHS) and also the two plugs on the left and bottom right of my freeview box (As seen in the picture - Y, CVBS and Pr)

No success. Not exactly sure what im doing lol

No, they need to go into the yellow white and red outputs of the freeview box, matching to the inputs on the tv.

There are 2 pairs of red and white, either of those will do for audio, ignore the red with the other video plugs
